Any person who wilfully violates his written promise to appear in court is guilty of a misdemeanor, regardless of the disposition of the original charge upon which he was arrested, and upon conviction of such misdemeanor, shall be punished by fine not exceeding $25 or by imprisonment in the County Jail for a period not exceeding five days, or both such fine and imprisonment.
