(c) Moisture hazard substances subject to the provisions of this section shall include, among others, the following:
Aluminum powder;
Barium peroxide;
Calcium carbide;

Cyanides;
Magnesium powder;
Phosphorous pentasulphide;
Metallic potassium;
Potassium peroxide;
Metallic sodium;
Sodium peroxide;
Strontium peroxide;
Zinc powder.
(Ord. No. 991-49. Passed 6-27-49, eff. 6-27-49)
(a) A permit from the Fire Chief shall be required for the storage of more than five (5) pounds of any moisture hazard substance.
(b) Moisture hazard substances shall be stored so as to preclude the possibility of contact with water or moisture. No moisture hazard substance shall be stored in a basement or cellar and all such material shall be stored in rooms with floors above the adjacent grade level. Containers of such substances shall be stored at least six (6) inches above floor level.
(c) Rooms in which moisture hazard substances are stored shall be dry and all such substances shall be protected from the weather.
(d) All such substances shall be stored in suitable closed containers opened only for removing material and closed immediately thereafter.
(e) Metallic sodium, potassium and calcium shall, in all cases, be separately stored in noncombustible cabinets and shall not be stored in the same cabinet with other combustible or flammable material. The doors to such cabinets shall be plainly marked with a warning sign giving the name of the material stored within and the word “DANGEROUS.”
(f) Moisture hazard substances other than metallic sodium, potassium or calcium, kept in wholesale drug establishments, retail drug establishments, laboratories or similar establishments where their storage is incidental to general drug and chemical storage, or in manufacturing plants or industrial plants where their storage and use are incidental to the industrial process, in quantities exceeding an aggregate of twenty-five (25) pounds but not exceeding an aggregate of two hundred (200) pounds, shall be stored separately in combustible cabinets marked, “MOISTURE HAZARD SUBSTANCE - KEEP DRY.”
(g) Moisture hazard substances other than calcium carbide, kept in quantities exceeding an aggregate of two hundred (200) pounds in manufacturing plants or industrial plants where their storage and use are incidental to the industrial process, or in wholesale drug establishments, retail drug establishments, laboratories or similar establishments, shall be stored in suitable containers in fire-resistive rooms conforming to the applicable provisions of Section 3129.43(c). The door to each room shall be marked in bright red letters not less than six (6) inches high, with the principal strokes not less than three- fourths (3/4) inch wide, “MOISTURE HAZARD SUBSTANCE – KEEP DRY.” No sprinkler heads, hose, hot water radiators or fire-extinguishing apparatus using water shall be installed in any storage room in which moisture hazard substances in quantity are stored. Each such room shall have within or immediately outside it an adequate quantity of inert granular material or powder for use as an extinguishing medium, as directed or approved by the Chief.
(h) Moisture hazard substances other than calcium carbide, which are the end product or major by-product of a manufacturing plant or process, shall be subject to the rules and regulations, restrictions and requirements of the Chief as deemed necessary for safety to persons or property.
(i) Materials of especially toxic nature, such as cyanides, or which may produce toxic gases when mixed with other materials, shall be stored and used in an approved safe manner as approved or directed by the Commissioner of Air Pollution Control.
(j) All cyanide storage, except for one (1) day’s supply, shall be in locked cabinets or rooms with adequate approved ventilation, isolated from locker and washrooms and from areas where eating is permitted.
(k) Processes involving the use of cyanides shall be so arranged that there can be no mixing of cyanides with acids. Areas where cyanides are used shall be restricted to authorized personnel.

CALCIUM CARBIDE AND ACETYLENE
(a) Calcium carbide and acetylene generated therefrom shall not be used for interior lighting, room or space heating or cooking.
(b) No person shall generate, transport, store or sell acetylene compressed to a pressure greater than fifteen (15) pounds to the square inch except when it is dissolved in acetone or other suitable medium and confined in a cylinder conforming to the specifications of the Interstate Commerce Commission. All such cylinders shall be, or shall have been, tested at the time of manufacture, and no cylinders shall be used which do not meet such test requirements.
(c) No person shall compress and dissolve acetylene so that the solution pressure exceeds two hundred fifty (250) psi at seventy degrees Fahrenheit (70°F), or transport, store or sell dissolved acetylene when the solution pressure exceeds such pressure at seventy degrees Fahrenheit (70°F).
(d) No person shall transfer any portion of the contents of one (1) acetylene cylinder into another acetylene cylinder or mix any other gas with acetylene in an acetylene cylinder.
(Ord. No. 991-49. Passed 6-27-49, eff. 6-27-49)
(a) No calcium carbide shall be stored except in approved metal containers.
(b) Calcium carbide contained within approved metal containers up to an aggregate quantity of six hundred (600) pounds may be stored or kept within one (1) building or fire area on shelves or in cabinets or in other approved manner in safe locations approved by the Fire Chief.
(c) Calcium carbide stored within any building or fire area in excess of an aggregate quantity of six hundred (600) pounds shall be stored or kept in fire- resistive rooms conforming to the provisions of Section 3129.43(c), as modified in subsections (h) and (i) hereof, provided that the maximum quantity stored in any such room shall be five thousand (5,000) pounds, and provided further that such storage room is within a one (1) story building without cellar or basement underneath the same. Such storage room may also be used for storage of acetylene cylinders.
(d) Not to exceed five thousand (5,000) pounds of calcium carbide may also be stored within a fire- resistive generator room located in a one (1) story building without cellar or basement underneath such room, constructed in conformity with the provisions of Section 3129.43(c), as modified in subsections (h) and (i) hereof.
(e) The maximum quantity of calcium carbide stored within one (1) building shall be an aggregate of five thousand (5,000) pounds unless such building is an isolated one (1) story building of Class I, fireproof or Class II, incombustible construction without cellar or basement, located either in the Second Fire District or in the Urban District, used only for the storage of calcium carbide and/or acetylene cylinders and/or the generation of acetylene, and located not less than twenty (20) feet from any other building and from any line on adjoining premises on which buildings may be built.
(f) Exterior openings in walls of rooms used for the storage of calcium carbide in quantities in excess of six hundred (600) pounds shall not be less than twenty (20) feet from any other building and from lines on adjoining premises on which buildings may be built.
(g) All rooms in which calcium carbide is stored shall be dry with walls and roof of thoroughly weather- resistant construction. All such rooms and all rooms where acetylene is generated or stored shall be well- ventilated by means of natural ventilation.
(h) The fire resistance ratings of enclosures of fire-resistive rooms in which calcium carbide is stored or kept under the provisions of subsections (c) or (d) hereof shall be not less than the following:
