§ 385.21 Storage and Handling
   (a)   A permit from the Fire Chief shall be required for the storage of more than five (5) pounds of any moisture hazard substance.
   (b)   Moisture hazard substances shall be stored so as to preclude the possibility of contact with water or moisture. No moisture hazard substance shall be stored in a basement or cellar and all such material shall be stored in rooms with floors above the adjacent grade level. Containers of such substances shall be stored at least six (6) inches above floor level.
   (c)   Rooms in which moisture hazard substances are stored shall be dry and all such substances shall be protected from the weather.
   (d)   All such substances shall be stored in suitable closed containers opened only for removing material and closed immediately thereafter.
   (e)   Metallic sodium, potassium and calcium shall, in all cases, be separately stored in noncombustible cabinets and shall not be stored in the same cabinet with other combustible or flammable material. The doors to such cabinets shall be plainly marked with a warning sign giving the name of the material stored within and the word “DANGEROUS.”
   (f)   Moisture hazard substances other than metallic sodium, potassium or calcium, kept in wholesale drug establishments, retail drug establishments, laboratories or similar establishments where their storage is incidental to general drug and chemical storage, or in manufacturing plants or industrial plants where their storage and use are incidental to the industrial process, in quantities exceeding an aggregate of twenty-five (25) pounds but not exceeding an aggregate of two hundred (200) pounds, shall be stored separately in combustible cabinets marked, “MOISTURE HAZARD SUBSTANCE - KEEP DRY.”
   (g)   Moisture hazard substances other than calcium carbide, kept in quantities exceeding an aggregate of two hundred (200) pounds in manufacturing plants or industrial plants where their storage and use are incidental to the industrial process, or in wholesale drug establishments, retail drug establishments, laboratories or similar establishments, shall be stored in suitable containers in fire-resistive rooms conforming to the applicable provisions of Section 3129.43(c). The door to each room shall be marked in bright red letters not less than six (6) inches high, with the principal strokes not less than three- fourths (3/4) inch wide, “MOISTURE HAZARD SUBSTANCE – KEEP DRY.” No sprinkler heads, hose, hot water radiators or fire-extinguishing apparatus using water shall be installed in any storage room in which moisture hazard substances in quantity are stored. Each such room shall have within or immediately outside it an adequate quantity of inert granular material or powder for use as an extinguishing medium, as directed or approved by the Chief.
   (h)   Moisture hazard substances other than calcium carbide, which are the end product or major by-product of a manufacturing plant or process, shall be subject to the rules and regulations, restrictions and requirements of the Chief as deemed necessary for safety to persons or property.
   (i)   Materials of especially toxic nature, such as cyanides, or which may produce toxic gases when mixed with other materials, shall be stored and used in an approved safe manner as approved or directed by the Commissioner of Air Pollution Control.
   (j)   All cyanide storage, except for one (1) day’s supply, shall be in locked cabinets or rooms with adequate approved ventilation, isolated from locker and washrooms and from areas where eating is permitted.
   (k)   Processes involving the use of cyanides shall be so arranged that there can be no mixing of cyanides with acids. Areas where cyanides are used shall be restricted to authorized personnel.
