AUTOMATIC SPRINKLERS; OTHER EXTINGUISHING EQUIPMENT
(b) Such automatic fire extinguishing equipment shall be approved automatic sprinklers, except that in locations where automatic sprinklers would be hazardous or inadvisable because of the nature of the occupancy or contents, automatic fire extinguishing equipment comprising one (1) or more of the following types of systems may be approved in lieu thereof by the Fire Chief.
(1) Carbon Dioxide Fire Extinguishing Systems. When installed in conformity with the recommendation contained in NFPA Standard No. 12 entitled “Carbon Dioxide Extinguishing Systems.”
(2) Foam Extinguishing Systems. When installed in conformity with the recommendations contained in NFPA Standard No. 11 entitled “Foam Extinguishing Systems.”
(3) Water Spray Extinguishing Systems. When installed in conformity with recommendations contained in NFPA Standard No. 15 entitled “Water Spray Fixed Systems.”
(4) Steam Extinguishing Systems. When installed in conformity with the recommendations contained in NFPA Standard No. 86A entitled “Class A Ovens and Furnaces.”
(5) Other Approved Automatic Systems. When approved and authorized for use by the Board of Building Standards and Building Appeals and when installed in conformity with the conditions of approval.
(c) No automatic sprinkler system shall be installed where water discharged therefrom will come in contact with high voltage electrical equipment or moisture-hazardous substances. For the purposes of this subsection, high voltage shall be deemed to be two thousand two hundred (2,200) volts and over.
(d) As used in this Fire Prevention Code, “automatic sprinklers or other approved automatic fire extinguishing equipment” means approved automatic sprinklers except in instances where substitution of
other automatic fire extinguishing equipment is approved by the Fire Chief.
(Ord. No. 991-49. Passed 6-27-49, eff. 6-27-49)
Automatic sprinklers or other automatic fire extinguishing equipment shall be installed in buildings or other structures where specified in the following table and where specified for special uses or occupancies in Chapter 3125.

(b) “Automatic sprinkler head” means a device which will open automatically within a predetermined temperature range because of fusing of a fusible element, or will operate automatically when controls are subjected to a predetermined accelerated rise in temperature.
(c) “Automatic sprinkler system” means operate automatically to discharge or diffuse a stream or spray of water through automatic sprinkler heads or through open sprinkler heads.
(d) “Wet-pipe sprinkler system” means a sprinkler system in which all piping is maintained filled with water and connected to an approved source of water supply.
