4-344-010 Definitions.
   As used in this chapter:
   "Regulated device" means a:
      1.   Steam engine or steam boiler with an output capacity in excess of 50 boiler horsepower or intended for operation at a pressure in excess of 10 psig.
      2.   Hot water boiler intended for operation at a pressure in excess of 160 psi or temperature in excess of 250°F (121°C).
   The term "regulated device" does not include locomotive engines or boilers carrying not more than 10 ten pounds pressure of steam per square inch.

4-344-020 License – Required.
   No regulated device shall be used, managed or operated except by a stationary engineer who is licensed under this chapter and who shall have and exhibit a certificate thereof.
   No individual shall take charge of, manage or operate any regulated equipment, or any portion of a steam plant, in the city without a license, as provided by this chapter.
   Every person who violates this section shall be fined in accordance with Section 14A-3-302 for each offense. Each day that a violation continues shall constitute a separate and distinct offense.
   Any person owning or controlling any regulated device or steam plant who shall authorize or permit any individual without a license, as required herein, to take charge of, manage or operate the regulated device or steam plant, shall be fined in accordance with Section 14A-3-302 for each offense. 4-344-030 License – Application.
   An application for a license to engage in the business of stationary engineer shall be made on forms furnished by the Commissioner of Buildings, and shall set forth the name and age of the applicant, and the extent of the applicant's experience.

4-344-040 License – Applicants' qualifications.
   An applicant for a stationary engineer's license shall have at least two years' practical experience in the management, operation or construction of steam engines and boilers and a thorough knowledge of the construction, management and operation of steam boilers.
   An applicant's practical experience shall be verified through a letter stating the applicant's dates and locations of employment, the applicant's duties and responsibilities, and the steam output per hour and operating pressure for all equipment the applicant has experience with. The letter shall be on the employer's letterhead and signed by the applicant's supervisor, who shall be a Chief Stationary Engineer or equivalent. If the applicant's experience is in the City of Chicago or another jurisdiction that licenses stationary engineers, a copy of the supervisor's stationary engineer license certificate must be enclosed with the letter.
   An applicant for a stationary engineer's license shall be at least 20 years of age and shall be of good character, all of which shall be verified in writing by the applicant.

4-344-050 License – Examination.
   (a)   The Commissioner of Buildings shall have power to examine into the qualifications of applicants for licenses as stationary engineers and grant licenses.
   (b)   If a person seeking to renew registration as a stationary engineer under this chapter has not been registered as a stationary engineer for a continuous period of three years, such person shall be reexamined in accordance with subsection (a) before such person shall again be registered as a stationary engineer.
