Unless a provision explicitly states otherwise, the following terms and phrases, as used in this ordinance, shall have the meanings hereinafter designated.
a. Fats, Oils and Greases
- Organic polar or non-polar compounds derived from animal and or plant sources that contain multiple carbon chain triglyceride molecules. These substances are detectable and measurable using analytical test procedures established in 40 CFR Part 136 as may be amended from time to time. All are sometimes referred to herein as "grease", "greases", "fats, oils and greases", or "FOG".
b. Grease Trap or Interceptor
- A device for separating and retaining waterborne grease or greases prior to the wastewater entering the sanitary sewer collection and treatment system. These devices also serve to collect settable solids generated by and from food preparation activities prior to the water entering the sanitary sewer collection and treatment system. Grease traps and interceptors are sometimes referred to herein as "grease interceptors".
c. Cooking Establishments
- Those establishments primarily engaged in the activities of preparing, serving or otherwise making available for consumption food stuffs and that use one or more of the following preparatory activities: Cooking by Frying (all methods), Baking, Grilling, Sauteing, Rotisserie Cooking, Broiling, Boiling, Blanching, Roasting, Toasting, or Poaching. Also included are Infrared Heating, Searing, Barbecuing, and any other food preparation activity that produces a hot, non-drinkable food product in or on a receptacle that requires washing.
d. Non-Cooking Establishments
- Those establishments primarily engaged in the preparation of pre-cooked foodstuffs that do not include any form of cooking. These include cold dairy and frozen food stuffs preparation and serving establishments.
e. Minimum Design Capacity
- The design features of a grease interceptor and its ability or volume required to effectively intercept and retain greases from grease laden wastewater discharged into the public sanitary sewer.
f. Equipment Servicing Establishment
- Those establishments primarily engaged in the servicing, repairing, rebuilding, maintaining, cleaning, steam cleaning, washing, fueling or refueling of vehicles or equipment.
g. Water/Oil Separator
- A device for separating and containing non-aqueous oils and other lightweight materials from water or wastewater prior to discharge to the sanitary sewer collection system.
h. User
- Any person, including those located inside or outside the jurisdictional limits of the Town of Schererville, but within the sanitary boundaries who contributes, causes or permits the contribution or discharge of wastewater from mobile sources such as those who discharge hauled wastewater.
i. Town of Schererville
- The Town of Schererville, its Utility Board of Trustees, the Town Council of Schererville, as its Sanitary Board.
j. Publicly Owned Treatment or POTW
- A "treatment works" as defined by Section 212 of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act (United States Code, § 1292) which is owned by the State or municipality. This definition includes any devices or systems used in the wastes and any conveyances which convey wastewater to a treatment plant. The term also means the municipal entity having jurisdiction over the industrial users and responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the treatment works.
k. Superintendent - The person designated by the town to supervise the operation of the POTW, and who is charged with certain duties and responsibilities by this ordinance or his duly authorized representative.
I. Wastewater
- Liquid and water-carried wastes, and sewage from residential dwellings, commercial buildings, industrial and manufacturing facilities, and institutions, whether treated or untreated, which are contributed to the POTWS.
m. Wastewater Treatment Plant or Treatment Plant/Facility
- That portion of this POTW designed to provide treatment of sewage and industrial waste.
