a. Refuse - is all putrescible and non-putrescible wastes (except human body wastes), including garbage, rubbish, recyclables, and yard waste. 17
b. Garbage - is putrescible animal and vegetable wastes resulting from the handling, preparation, cooking and consumption of food.
c. Rubbish - is limited to putrescible and non-putrescible solid waste, both combustible and non-combustible, including paper, cardboard, bottles, tin/steel/aluminum cans, grass clippings, small amounts of branches (Not to exceed two (2) cubic yards) cut in four (4) foot lengths and securely bundled, glass, bedding, rags, crockery, wood, small amounts of construction and demolition debris (not to exceed two (2) cubic yards) cut in four (4) foot lengths and securely bundled, and one (1) large item per week (furniture and appliances.)
d. Recyclables - include, but are not limited to, newspaper and all inserts, glass bottles and jars (clear, brown, green), tin/steel/aluminum cans, plastic containers (1-2-3 liter plastic pop containers, milk and water jugs, any liquid laundry detergent bottles). Additional recyclables may be added as markets develop upon the mutual agreement between both parties without modification of the contract.
e. Yard Waste - is compostible organic waste resulting from the maintenance of lawns, gardens, landscaping and trees which include grass clippings, tree branches, and leaves (in excess of thirty-two (32) gallons).
f. Dwellings - is a dwelling, or a portion of a dwelling, used primarily as a place of abode for one (1) or more persons, including apartment houses of not more than four (4) dwelling units, but not including motels and hotels.
g. Dwelling Unit - is a dwelling, or portion of a dwelling, used by one family for cooking, living and sleeping purposes. Contractors shall be entitled to compensation accordingly; however, such service shall be limited to one (1) collection per week of a maximum of four (4) thirty-two (32) gallon containers.
h. Garbage Container - is a container made of plastic or metal, equipped with suitable handles and tight-fitting covers, and plastic garbage bags or similar receptacles. Containers shall be watertight and of a type approved by the Town with a capacity of not less than twenty (20) gallons and not more than thirty-two (32) gallons. Containers shall be provided by the household and shall be kept clean, neat, and sanitary at all times.
i. Recycling Container - is an eighteen (18) gallon plastic container used for the placement of discarded recyclables.
j. Commercial Unit - is a building, or a part thereof, or an establishment for the conduct of a single business. Apartment houses, motels, hotels, schools, churches, civil and athletic centers, and all other establishments which produce refuse, but which are not dwelling units, shall be considered as commercial units. Private unit developments (P.U.D.) shall also be considered as commercial units.
k. Town Dumpster - A container used and maintained by the Town of Schererville for the purposes of dumping refuse as defined in Section 6-115, by residents and employees of the Town of Schererville.
l. Refuse Collection Center - An area designated by the Town Manager, or other authorized person, containing one or more dumpsters to be used for the collection and disposal of refuse.
m. Out of Town Generated Refuse - Refuse, as defined in Section 6-115, generated by or from sources outside the Town of Schererville.
n. Commercial Refuse - Refuse, as defined in Section 6-115 generated from or by commercial establishments, enterprises or businesses operating within or without of the Town of Schererville.
o. Multifamily Structure - A building designed and used exclusively for residential purposes and containing two (2) or more dwelling units separated by a common party wall or otherwise structurally attached.
