a. Unclaimed animals will be put through the adoption program for a fee of $65.00. This fee includes neutering or spaying, rabies vaccination, first Distemper, Bordtella, Feline-V, heartworm test, AVID microchip, and leukemia/AIDS test for the appropriate species. Schererville Animal Control will take the animals to the veterinarian or will issue a certificate to the new owners to have services performed within 30 days of adoption. No animal shall be released for adoption without meeting the following criteria:
1. Paying adoption fee of sixty-five dollars ($65.00), payable to the Town.
2. Signing a Release of Liability and Adoption Contract.
3. No observable behavior problems.
4. No observable signs of aggression.
5. No documented bites on record with any Animal Control, Humane Society, or Police Department.
Schererville Animal Control Officers will collect the fee, issue a receipt, and receipt of the money at the Town Clerk’s Office on a daily basis.
Schererville Animal Control will administer AVID microchips by request for a fee of fifteen dollars ($15.00) per animal to residents and nonresidents.
b. Animals to be considered for adoption must meet the following criteria:
1. No observable behavioral problems;
2. No observable health problems;
3. Should be observably tame so as not to be a threat to the public;
4. Have not had two (2) or more bites on record with any Animal Control, Humane Society or Police Department; and
5. May be prohibited by state law or local ordinance.
c. All animals considered for adoption will be kept not less than 15 business days.
d. No animal will be euthanized without prior approval from the appropriate Deputy Chief or Chief of Police.
