Sec. 1-4 Definitions. 3
   In the construction of this Code and of all Ordinances, the following definitions shall be applied:
   a.   Clerk-Treasurer means the Clerk and Fiscal Officer of the Town of Schererville.
   b.   Code means the Schererville Town Code.
   c.    Computation of Time: Except when otherwise provided, the time within which an act is required to be done shall be computed by excluding the first day and including the last day, unless the last day be Sunday or a holiday, in which it shall also be excluded.
   d.    Council means the Town Council, formerly known as the Board of Trustees. 4
   e.    County means the County of Lake, State of Indiana.
   f.    Et Seq. is the Latin phrase meaning and the following.
   g.    I.C., shall refer to state law found in the Indiana Code.
   h.   Law denotes applicable federal law, the Constitution and statutes of the State of Indiana, the Ordinances of the Town of Schererville, and, when appropriate, any and all rules and regulations which may be promulgated thereunder.
   i.    May is permissive.
   j.   Month means a calendar month.
   k.    Must and Shall are each mandatory.
   l.   Oath includes an affirmation or declaration in all cases in which, by law, an affirmation may be substituted for an oath, and in such cases the words swear and sworn shall be equivalent to the words affirm and affirmed.
   m.   Owner, applied to a building or land, includes any part owner, joint owner, tenant in common, joint tenant, tenant by the entirety, of the whole or a part of such building or land.
   n.   Person includes a natural person, joint venture, joint stock company, partnership, association, club, company, corporation, business, trust organization, or the manager, lessee, agent, servant, officer or employee of any of them.
   o.    Personal Property includes money, goods, chattels, things in action, and evidences of debt.
   p.    Preceding and Following mean next before and next after, respectively,
   q.    Property includes real and personal property.
   r.    Public Place means any street or highway, sidewalk, park, cemetery, school yard or open space adjacent thereto and any lake or stream.
   s.   Real Property shall include lands, tenements, and hereditaments.
   t.   Reasonable Time means in all cases where any provision shall require any act to be done in a reasonable time or reasonable notice to be given any person, such reasonable time or notice shall be deemed to mean such time only as may be necessary in the prompt execution of such duty or compliance with such notice.
   u.   Sidewalk means that portion of the street between the curb line and the adjacent property line intended for the use of pedestrians.
   v.   Signature or Subscription includes a mark when the person cannot write.
   w.   State means the State of Indiana.
   x.   Street means all streets, highways, avenues, lanes, alleys, courts, squares, places, curbs, or other public ways in the Town which have been or may hereafter be dedicated and open to public use, or such other public property so designated in any law of this state.
   y.    Substantial Property Interest means any right in real property that may be affected in a substantial way by actions authorized by Planning and Development laws of the State of Indiana, including a fee interest, a life estate, a future interest, a present possessory interest, or an equitable interest of a contract purchaser. 5
   z.   Tenant or Occupant applies to a building or land, and shall include any person holding a written or oral lease of, or who occupies the whole or a part of such building or land, whether alone or with others.
   aa.   Town means the Town of Schererville, Indiana, or the area within the territorial limits of the Town of Schererville, Indiana, and such territory, outside of the Town of Schererville over which the Town has jurisdiction or control by virtue of any constitutional or statutory provision.
   bb.   Town Council means and includes all former references to the Board of Trustees.
   cc.   Written includes printed, typewritten, mimeographed, multigraphed, or otherwise reproduced in permanent visible form.
   dd.   Year means a calendar year.
