6-1-1: CREATION OF DEPARTMENT:
There is hereby created a police department, an executive department of the city. The police department shall consist of the chief of police and such other members as may be provided from time to time by the city council. (1967 Code § 8.001)
All police officers, other than those officers who shall be employed on a full time basis, shall be qualified to enter and successfully complete any training mandated by the Illinois law enforcement training and standards board.
A part time police officer shall have all the responsibilities of a full time police officer. Part time officers shall not work more than one thousand five hundred sixty (1,560) hours in a twelve (12) month period beginning on January 1 of any calendar year. Part time officers shall not be assigned to supervise or direct full time police officers and shall be trained in accordance with the Illinois police training act 1 and the rules and requirements of the ILETSB.
Any person employed as a part time officer shall meet the following standards:
   A.   Be at least twenty one (21) years of age.
   B.   Possess a high school diploma or GED certificate.
   C.   Be of good moral character, of sound health, and physically and mentally able to perform assigned duties.
   D.   Possess a valid Illinois driver's license.
   E.   Have no prior felony convictions.
   F.   Pass a complete medical examination conducted by a licensed physician.
   G.   Any individual with prior military service must have been honorably discharged.
Part time officers shall serve under the jurisdiction of the chief of police in all disciplinary matters. Part time officers may be removed from employment at any time by the chief of police. Part time officers shall comply with all rules and regulations of the police department as issued by the chief of police, upon approval by the mayor and city council.
The aforesaid hiring standard, particularly with respect to part time police officers employed by the city of Mt. Pulaski, Logan County, Illinois, shall be submitted to the Illinois law enforcement training and standards board, as required by statute. (Ord., 1-22-2013)
