242.26 SECRETARY/DISPATCHER FOR THE POLICE DIVISION.
   (a)   There is hereby established the position of Secretary/Dispatcher for the Police Division. The Secretary/Dispatcher shall be under the direct supervision of the Chief of Police, shall augment and supplement the present police force and shall be primarily responsible for providing coverage for clerical duties, communications and information for both the Police and Fire Divisions. This person shall operate and control the communications system for both the Police and Fire Divisions, keep up-to-date files needed by such Divisions, type necessary forms, letters and correspondence and perform any other duties which may be required by the Chief of Police. This person shall maintain contact with and dispatch cruisers as required, sound fire alarms and notify the Fire Division and the Chief of Police of the location of fires, answer incoming inquiries in a courteous and effective manner, maintain accurate records and files of all activity pertaining to the function of his or her office, and have charge of the City Jail, providing care, food, protection and safety as required for prisoners until they are transported to the County Jail. As directed by his or her superior, the Secretary/Dispatcher may carry firearms only in cases of extreme emergency. He or she shall also maintain radio contact on a County-wide basis, replace the Dispatcher, Class Two, if necessary, and perform the duties of dispatcher and jailer when called in.

   (b)   The Secretary/Dispatcher shall be compensated as determined by Council from time to time.
