SEC. 173.   FOLLOWING TOO CLOSELY.
173.   FOLLOWING TOO CLOSELY.The driver of any motor vehicle shall not follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent, having due regard for the speed of such vehicles and the traffic upon and the condition of the street. [Ref. Iowa Code §321.307]
SEC. 174.   TRAVELING ON RIGHT-HAND SIDE.
174.   TRAVELING ON RIGHT-HAND SIDE.A vehicle shall be driven upon the right half of the roadway upon all roadways of sufficient width, except as follows:
   a.   When overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction under the rules governing such movement.
   b.   When an obstruction exists making it necessary to drive to the left of the center of the roadway, provided, any person so doing shall yield the right of way to all vehicles traveling in the proper direction upon the unobstructed portion of the roadway within such distance as to constitute an immediate hazard.
   c.   Upon a roadway divided into three marked lanes for traffic under the rules applicable thereon.
   d.   Upon a roadway restricted to one-way traffic.

SEC. 175.   MEETING ON PUBLIC HIGHWAYS OR STREETS.
175.   MEETING ON PUBLIC HIGHWAYS OR STREETS.Persons on horseback, or in vehicles, including motor vehicles meeting each other on the public streets shall give one-half of the traveled way thereof by turning to the right. [Ref. Iowa Code §321.297, 298]
SEC. 176.   OVERTAKING A VEHICLE.
176.   OVERTAKING A VEHICLE.The following rules shall govern the overtaking and passing of vehicles proceeding in the same direction, subject to those limitations, exceptions, and special rules hereinafter stated:
   1.   The driver of a vehicle overtaking another vehicle proceeding in the same direction shall pass to the left of the other vehicle at a safe distance and shall not again drive to the right side of the roadway until safely clear of the overtaken vehicle.
   2.   Except when overtaking and passing on the right is permitted, the driver of an overtaken vehicle shall give way to the right in favor of the overtaking vehicle and shall not increase the speed of the overtaken vehicle until completely passed by the overtaking vehicle.

SEC. 177.   PASSING ON THE RIGHT SIDE.
177.   PASSING ON THE RIGHT SIDE.   Unless otherwise prohibited by law, the driver of a vehicle on a roadway with unobstructed pavement of sufficient width for two or more lanes of traffic moving in the same direction as the vehicle being passed may overtake and pass upon the right of another vehicle which is making or about to make a left turn when such movement can be made in safety. SEC. 178.   OVERTAKING AND PASSING A VEHICLE WITH UNOBSTRUCTED PAVEMENT OF SUFFICIENT WIDTH FOR FOUR OR MORE LANES.
178.   OVERTAKING AND PASSING A VEHICLE WITH UNOBSTRUCTED PAVEMENT OF SUFFICIENT WIDTH FOR FOUR OR MORE LANES.   Unless otherwise prohibited by law, the driver of a vehicle may overtake and, allowing sufficient clearance, pass another vehicle proceeding in the same direction either upon the left or upon the right on a roadway with unobstructed pavement of sufficient width for four or more lanes of moving traffic when such movement can be made in safety. The driver of a vehicle shall not drive off the pavement or upon the shoulder of the roadway or upon the apron or roadway of an intersecting roadway in overtaking or passing on the right or the left. SEC. 179.   ROADWAYS LANED FOR TRAFFIC.
179.   ROADWAYS LANED FOR TRAFFIC.Whenever any roadway has been divided into three or more clearly marked lanes for traffic the following rules in addition to all others consistent herewith shall apply:
A vehicle shall be driven as nearly as practical entirely within a single lane and shall not be moved from such lane until the driver has first ascertained that such movement can be made with safety.
If a roadway is divided into three lanes, a vehicle shall not be driven in the center lane except as follows:
   a.    When overtaking and passing another vehicle where the roadway is clearly visible and such center lane is clear of traffic within a safe distance.
   b.    In preparation for a left turn or where such center lane is at the time allocated exclusively to traffic moving in the direction the vehicle is proceeding and is signposted to give notice of such allocation.
Official signs may be erected directing slow-moving traffic to use a designated lane or allocating specified lanes to traffic moving in the same direction and drivers of vehicles shall obey the directions of every such sign.
Vehicles moving in a lane designated for slow-moving traffic shall yield the right-of-way to vehicles moving in the same direction in a lane not so designated when such lanes merge to form a single lane.
A portion of a highway provided with a lane for slow-moving vehicles does not become a roadway marked for three lanes of traffic.
