Upon the completion of the installation of the electric wiring, devices and equipment, it shall be the duty of the person installing same to notify the electrical inspector in writing, and the electrical inspector shall inspect the installation within twenty-four hours of the time such written notice is given. If, upon inspection, it is found that any part of the work does not comply with the provisions of this chapter, the electrical inspector shall post a red tag in the service switch box stating that violations of this chapter have been found to exist and he shall give notice of such violations to the person to whom the permit for the work was issued. When such red tag has been posted and until it has been removed by the inspector, it is unlawful to lath over or otherwise cover and conceal any part of the electrical installation. If, upon inspection, it is found that all work covered by one permit is completed and complies with the provisions of this chapter, the inspector shall issue to the person installing the work a certificate of approval. If the entire installation is completed and given final approval, the certificate shall authorize connection to the electrical service and the use of the installation and written notice of such authorization shall be sent to the public utility corporation furnishing the electrical service and a white tag, stating such final approval and authorization, shall be posted in the service switch box. A wiring installation shall not be considered as completed and no final certificate of approval of such an installation shall be issued until all connections have been completed in all outlet boxes, except the connections to fixture wiring. (Prior code § 16-1-17)
Where any part of an installation is to be hidden from view by the permanent placement of parts of a building, the person installing the wiring shall notify the inspector and such parts of the installation shall not be concealed until they have been inspected and approved. On large installations where the concealment of parts of the wiring proceeds continuously, the person installing the wiring shall give the inspector due notices and inspections shall be made periodically during the progress of the work. When an addition is made to an existing electrical installation which has been installed in any approved system of wiring, if the existing installation is found to be in a safe operating condition it will not be necessary to rewire the existing part. In case the existing installation is found to be not in a safe operating condition, the unsafe wiring must be removed and rewired in accordance with the provisions of this chapter before a final certificate of approval will be issued.
