(a) The following section shall apply to all commercial/industrial structures built and fit for occupancy after July 1, 2023, including all commercial/industrial structures with an automatic fire alarm system, automatic suppression system, or security gate. This section shall also apply to existing structures built prior to July 1, 2023, if said structure is renovated or an addition is constructed at a cost of $5,000 or more. In the above-referenced instances, said structures shall be equipped with a key lock box at or near the main entrance as approved by the fire chief or his/her designee.
(b) The manufacturer, location, and style of the key lock box shall be approved by the fire chief prior to installation and at the time a building permit is issued. The key lock box shall be operational prior to the issuance of an occupancy permit.
(c) The number of keys in the lock box shall not exceed the maximum number recommended by the manufacturer of the lock box. Each key in the lock box shall be clearly labeled and contain appropriate contact information for a representative of the owner of the building.
(d) All properties with a security gate shall install the lock box outside of the gate with the gate access code and required keys inside the lock box.
(e) No changes in the lock box shall be made after installation without the approval of the fire chief or his/her designee.
(f) All costs associated with the purchase, installation and maintenance of any required key lock box shall be the sole responsibility of the property owner/occupant.
(g) In the event that a property owner/occupant adds, changes or rekeys any locks, new keys or access cards shall be simultaneously placed in the key lock box.
(h) Failure to adhere to the provisions of this section are subject to civil penalties based upon the fine schedule in City of Danville Code of Ordinances Chapter 1 (General Provisions) section 1-12(e) (General Code Enforcement).
