The storage of flammable liquids shall be isolated from the storage of pyroxylin plastic.
(b) Flammable liquids stored or kept inside a building shall not exceed twenty-five (25) gallons within one (1) fire area stored either in safety cans, sealed containers or approved metal cabinets, except that quantities in excess of that amount may be stored in fire resistive rooms for the storing or handling of hazardous substances constructed as specified in Section 3129.43(c).
(c) Cementing of sheets and other extensive cementing processes, where considerable quantities of flammable cement are used, and dipping and spraying in, or with, flammable liquid shall be done in well ventilated rooms devoted exclusively to such work and separated from the remainder of the building by vapor- tight walls or partitions having a fire resistance rating of not less than three-fourths (3/4), hour. Spraying and dipping shall be conducted in conformity with the provisions governing such operations included in Sections 385.01 to 385.17.
(Ord. No. 991-49. Passed 6-27-49, eff. 6-27-49)
Whenever operations include cutting, turning, shaping, beading, sanding, molding, hubbing, artificial softening or heating, or the use of mechanical equipment which introduces friction or is specially fire hazardous, operators shall be stationed not closer than three (3) feet apart and the amount of material per operator shall not exceed one-half (1/2) day’s supply or the quantity actually in process of manufacture, and shall be limited to the capacity of three (3) standard tote boxes, including material awaiting removal or use.
(Ord. No. 991-49. Passed 6-27-49, eff. 6-27-49)
(a) Fire extinguishing equipment shall be provided in conformity with the provisions of Fire Prevention and Building Codes deemed necessary by the Fire Chief.
(b) All buildings and parts of buildings used for manufacturing pyroxylin plastic or for storing pyroxylin plastic in process of manufacture, or except as provided in Section 385.63, used for storing more than fifty (50) pounds of pyroxylin plastic in one (1) fire area, shall be equipped with approved automatic fire extinguishing equipment.
(c) In all manufacturing rooms at least one (1) fire pail, kept continuously full of water, shall be provided for every two (2) persons engaged in manufacturing articles from pyroxylin plastic.
(Ord. No. 991-49. Passed 6-27-49, eff. 6-27-49)
All radiators, heating coils and uncovered pipes or returns used for heating that are near the floor or are so located as to permit combustible material, waste or dirt to come in contact with them shall be guarded with one-fourth (1/4) inch mesh galvanized steel wire cloth, twenty (20) U.S. gauge or approved equivalent. The tops of such enclosures shall be sloped so as to prevent their use as shelves.
(Ord. No. 991-49. Passed 6-27-49, eff. 6-27-49)
(a) The provisions of this section shall apply only to the storage of pyroxylin plastic products in packages, boxes, cartons or similar containers where such products are adequately separated and insulated by the method of packaging or by the boxes, cartons or similar containers in which they are contained, and when only limited small quantities are contained in one (1) package, box, carton or container.
(b) Whenever the storage space required for the storage of finished pyroxylin products in packages, boxes, cartons or similar containers exceeds three hundred fifty (350) cubic feet in one (1) fire area, such products shall be stored in a separate storage room used for pyroxylin plastic articles only. Such separate storage rooms shall conform to the applicable provisions of Section 3129.43(c), and walls, partitions, doors and other elements thereof shall have not less than the minimum fire resistance ratings specified therein.
(c) All separate storage rooms which exceed three hundred fifty (350) cubic feet in volume used for the storage of finished pyroxylin plastic products shall be equipped with an approved automatic sprinkler system with at least one (1) sprinkler head for each sixty-four (64) square feet of floor area or with other approved automatic fire extinguishing equipment. All such rooms, irrespective of volume, shall have approved provisions for fire venting. No such room shall exceed five hundred (500) square feet in floor area or five thousand (5,000) cubic feet in volume.
(d) Each storeroom in which finished pyroxylin plastic products are stored shall be provided with adequate ventilation equivalent to a clear opening of at least one-half (1/2) square inch per cubic foot of room content. Such ventilation shall be natural ventilation by means of sash glazed with thin glass and equipped for automatic opening as specified for the storage of pyroxylin products in process of manufacture, in Section 385.54(b)(7), or when approved fire-venting is otherwise provided, shall be approved mechanical ventilation.

(c) Lighting shall be so arranged that radiated heat will not cause dangerous increases in temperature of the displayed articles, and lamps shall be protected so that hot particles will not fall upon the plastic products should a lamp or lamps be broken.
(d) Wherever pyroxylin plastic products are displayed for sale there shall be a sign, prominently placed, marked “PYROXYLIN – FLAMMABLE” in letters not less than three-fourths (3/4) inch in height.
