A person shall be eligible for examination and appointment as a Firefighter/EMT, provided that such person has attained the age of eighteen years. There shall be no maximum age restrictions, but an applicant must successfully perform the physical and agility requirements for the position.

Any person applying for a position as a full-time or part-time firefighter shall, within 6 months of their appointment, reside within Lorain County or one of its adjoining counties and shall continue to reside within said geographical area while serving as a member of the Division of Fire.

(a) The authorized holidays for full-time Fire Department employees shall include the following: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Day, Easter Sunday, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Thanksgiving Day and the day after, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and 3 floating holidays with one that represents the employee’s birthday. Shift employees shall receive 10.6 hours of holiday pay for each of the designated holidays as set forth above, provided the employee works the regularly scheduled day surrounding the holiday, and when scheduled, the holiday itself. Forty-hour per week employees shall receive 8 hours of holiday pay or time, as applicable, for each of the designated holidays. Eligible employees who work on the holiday shall receive time and one-half for all hours worked.
(b) The floating holidays shall be three 24-hour days for shift employees and three 8-hour days for 40-hour employees, and may be taken with the prior approval of the Chief/designee.
(c) Part-time or intermittent employees of the Avon Fire Department who work on one of the designated holidays shall be compensated double time for all hours actually worked. The designated holidays are as follows: New Years Day, Easter Sunday, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
