Division of Fire

   EDITOR'S NOTE: The City enters into agreements for mutual aid for additional fire and emergency protection in the County. Copies of the latest relevant legislation and agreements may be obtained, at cost, from the Clerk of Council.

   Resolution R-42-00, passed September 11, 2000, authorized the Fire Division to provide fire protection and emergency services, as determined by the Fire Chief or officer on duty, upon the request of any political subdivision of the state, without the need for pre-existing contracts or agreements with the jurisdiction requesting such services. Copies of this resolution may be obtained, at cost, from the Clerk of Council.

246.01 ESTABLISHMENT; COMPOSITION.

   There is hereby established in and for the City a Division of Fire within the Department of Public Safety. The Division shall consist of a Fire Chief and such other officers and personnel as determined from time to time by Council.

246.02 DUTIES OF CHIEF; ABSENCE OF CHIEF AND ASSISTANT CHIEF.

    The Chief of the Division of Fire shall have control and command over all members of the Division and others aiding in extinguishing any fire, shall have charge and control of the City's fire apparatus and shall provide that the same be kept in good condition and repair. In the absence of both the Chief and the Assistant Chief of the Division, the Captain or Lieutenant on shift shall assume the operational duties of Chief as described above.

246.03 VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS' DEPENDENTS FUND BOARD.

   There is hereby established a Volunteer Firefighters' Dependents Fund Board pursuant to Ohio R.C. 146.02 et seq.

246.04 MAXIMUM AGE OF ORIGINAL FIREFIGHTER/EMT APPOINTEES.

   A person shall be eligible for examination and appointment as a Firefighter/EMT, provided that such person has attained the age of eighteen years. There shall be no maximum age restrictions, but an applicant must successfully perform the physical and agility requirements for the position.

246.05 RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT.

   Any person applying for a position as a full-time or part-time firefighter shall, within 6 months of their appointment, reside within Lorain County or one of its adjoining counties and shall continue to reside within said geographical area while serving as a member of the Division of Fire.
