§ 42-145. CHANGING LANES.
   Whenever any roadway has been divided into two or more clearly marked lanes for traffic, in addition to all other rules consistent with this section, the following requirements shall apply.
   (A)   A vehicle shall be driven as nearly as practical entirely within a single lane.
   (B)   A vehicle shall not be moved from the lane until the driver has first ascertained that the movement can be made with safety and then given a signal, not less than the last 100 feet traveled by the vehicle, of his or her intention to change lanes.
   (C)   Upon a roadway which is divided into three lanes, a vehicle shall not be driven in the center lane, except when overtaking and passing another vehicle where the roadway is clearly visible and the center lane is clear of traffic within a safe distance, or in preparation for a left turn or where the center lane is, at the time, allocated exclusively to traffic moving in the direction the vehicle is proceeding and is signposted to give notice of the allocation.
   (D)   A TWO-WAY LEFT-TURN LANE is a lane near the center of the highway set aside for use by vehicles making left turns in both directions from or into the roadway. Two-way left-turn lanes shall be designated by distinctive roadway markings consisting of parallel double yellow lines, interior line dashed and exterior line solid, on each side of the lane. A vehicle shall not be driven in a designated two-way left-turn lane except when preparing for or making a left turn from or into a roadway. Vehicles turning left from the roadway shall not be driven in the two-way left-turn lane for more than 200 feet while preparing for and making the turn. A vehicle turning left onto the roadway may utilize the two-way left-turn lane as a staging area by stopping and waiting for traffic proceeding in the same direction to clear before merging into the adjacent lanes of travel. A left turn shall not be made from any other lane where a two-way left-turn lane has been designated; provided however, this section shall not prohibit driving across a two-way left-turn lane when moving from a service drive onto such marked roadway.
   (E)   Upon a roadway which is divided into four or more lanes, a vehicle proceeding at less than the maximum posted speed, except when reduced speed is necessary for safe operation, shall not impede the normal flow of traffic by driving in the left lane. The vehicle shall be driven in the right-hand lane, except when overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction or when preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway.
   (F)   Official signs may be erected directing slow-moving traffic to use a designated lane or designating those lanes to be used by traffic moving in a particular direction regardless of the center of the roadway and drivers of vehicles shall obey the directions of every such sign.
(Prior Code, § 42-145)

   Driving on roadways laned for traffic, see 47 O.S. § 11-309
§ 42-146. DRIVING ON RIGHT SIDE OF ROADWAY REQUIRED; EXCEPTIONS.
   (A)   Upon all roadways of sufficient width, a vehicle shall be driven to the right of the center of the roadway, except as follows:
      (1)   When overtaking and passing other vehicles proceeding in the same direction under the laws governing such movement;
      (2)   When an obstruction exists making it necessary to drive to the left of the center of the highway; provided, any person so doing shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles traveling in the proper direction upon the unobstructed portion of the highway within such distance as to constitute an immediate hazard;
      (3)   Upon a roadway divided into three marked lanes for traffic under the rules applicable thereon;
      (4)   Upon a roadway designated and signposted for one-way traffic; or
      (5)   Upon a roadway having four or more lanes for moving traffic and providing for two-way movement of traffic.
   (B)   Upon all roadways, any vehicle proceeding at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions then existing shall be driven in the right-hand lane when available for traffic, or as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway, and may be temporarily driven upon the right-hand shoulder for the purpose of permitting other vehicles to pass. This subsection (B) shall not apply when overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction or when preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway.
   (C)   Upon any roadway having four or more lanes for moving traffic and providing for two-way movement of traffic, no vehicle shall be driven to the left of the centerline of the roadway, except when authorized by official traffic control devices designating certain lanes to the left side of the center of the roadway for use by traffic not otherwise permitted to use such lanes, or except as permitted under subsection (A)(2) above of this section. However, this subsection (C) shall not be construed as prohibiting the crossing of the centerline in making a left turn into or from an alley, private road, or driveway.

   Similar provisions, see 47 O.S. § 11-301
§ 42-147. WHEN OVERTAKING ON THE RIGHT IS PERMITTED.
   (A)   The driver of a vehicle may overtake and pass upon the right of another vehicle only under the following conditions:
      (1)   When the vehicle overtaken is making or about to make a left turn;
      (2)   Upon a street or highway with unobstructed pavement not occupied by parked vehicles of sufficient width for two or more lines of moving vehicles in each direction; or
      (3)   Upon a one-way street or upon any roadway on which traffic is restricted to one direction of movement, where the roadway is free from obstructions and of sufficient width for two or more lanes of moving vehicles.
   (B)   The driver of a vehicle may overtake and pass another vehicle upon the right only under conditions permitting such movement in safety. In no event shall such movement be made by driving off the pavement or main-traveled portion of the roadway.
(Prior Code, § 42-127)
Statutory reference:
   Overtaking on the right, see 47 O.S. § 11-304
§ 42-148. OVERTAKING A VEHICLE ON THE LEFT.
   The following requirements shall govern the overtaking and passing of vehicles proceeding in the same direction, subject to those limitations, exceptions, and special requirements hereinafter stated.
   (A)   The driver of a vehicle overtaking another vehicle proceeding in the same direction shall pass to the left thereof at a safe distance and shall not again drive to the right side of the street or roadway until safely clear of the overtaken vehicle.
   (B)   Except when overtaking and passing on the right is permitted, the driver of an overtaken vehicle shall give way to the right in favor of the overtaking vehicle on audible signal and shall not increase the speed of his or her vehicle until completely passed by the overtaking vehicle.
   (C)   Every driver who intends to pass another vehicle proceeding in the same direction, which requires moving his or her vehicle from one lane of traffic to another, shall first see that such movement can be made with safety and shall proceed to pass only after giving a proper signal by hand or mechanical device.
(Prior Code, § 42-148)
Statutory reference:
   Overtaking vehicle on left, see 47 O.S. § 11-303
§ 42-149. LIMITATIONS ON OVERTAKING ON THE LEFT; EXCEPTION.
   (A)   No vehicle shall be driven to the left side of the center of the street or roadway in overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction unless such left side is clearly visible and is free of oncoming traffic for a sufficient distance ahead to permit the completion of the overtaking and passing without interfering with the safe operation of any vehicle approaching from the opposite direction or any vehicle overtaken. In every instance, the overtaking vehicle must return to the right-hand side of the roadway before coming within 100 feet of any vehicle approaching from the opposite direction.
   (B)   No vehicle at any time shall be driven to the left side of the roadway under the following conditions:
      (1)   When approaching the crest of a grade, or upon a curve in the street or highway where the driver’s view along the street or highway is obstructed within such distance as to create a hazard in the event another vehicle might approach from the opposite direction;
      (2)   When the view is obstructed upon approaching within 100 feet of any bridge, viaduct, or tunnel; or
      (3)   When approaching within 100 feet of or traversing any intersection or railroad grade crossing, unless otherwise indicated by official traffic control devices.
   (C)   The limitations in subsection (B) above of this section shall not apply upon a one-way roadway; nor under the conditions described in 47 O.S. § 11-301(A)(2), nor to the driver of a vehicle turning left into or from an alley, private road, or driveway.
(Prior Code, § 42-149)
Statutory reference:
   Limitations on overtaking vehicle on left, see 47 O.S. § 11-305
§ 42-150. OVERTAKING AND PASSING BICYCLE.
   (A)   When overtaking and passing a bicycle proceeding in the same direction, a person driving a motor vehicle shall exercise due care by leaving a safe distance between the motor vehicle and the bicycle of not less than three feet until the motor vehicle is safely past the overtaken bicycle.
   (B)   If a person violates the provisions of subsection (A) above of this section and the violation results in a collision causing serious physical injury to another person, the person shall be subject to a fine of not more than $500.
   (C)   If a person violates the provisions of subsection (A) above of this section and the violation results in the death of another person, the person shall be subject to a fine of not more than $1,000, in addition to any other penalties prescribed by law.
