(A) Route 66 Visitors Center Mission. The Route 66 Visitors Center, an interactive cultural center, is a public-private partnership between the City of Albuquerque and local non-profits and local businesses, managed by the City of Albuquerque’s Arts and Culture Department, dedicated to preserving the history of the country’s longest urban stretch of Route 66 that is the only location where the route crosses itself and educating both the residents and visitors of Albuquerque about the role that the Historic corridor plays in economic and community development. The City shall carry out the original vision of the community members who first conceptualized the Route 66 Visitors Center in the 1990’s.
(B) Route 66 Visitors Center Goals.
(1) To provide a vibrant cultural hub and economic anchor for the Route 66 related events and celebrations, including the upcoming Route 66 Centennial Celebration.
(2) To provide a culturally and historically relevant location for launching programs and events to celebrate the legendary Route 66 corridor.
(3) To serve as a community workspace designed to inspire collaboration, creativity, and productivity among freelancers, entrepreneurs, startups, and remote workers who are producing products and services that elevate Route 66 a history related to the development of the center.
(4) To serve as an archive of research and oral history materials accessible to the public and Route 66 stakeholders for the purpose of education, preservation, and management of the historic Route 66 corridor.
(5) To reflect the diversity and richness of the City and the State’s culture and history related to Route 66.
(6) To serve as a catalyst for tourism-related business along West Central, including helping stimulate private and public investment, create jobs and bring greater prosperity to the West Side, and all of Albuquerque.
(7) To seek maximum support and cooperation from government, industry, academia, and private institutions.
