Sign permits are required. The permit fee is based on the actual construction of the sign as if it were a building. Signs that exceed twenty-five (25) feet in height will require drawings that carry an architect or engineer's seal. A separate electrical permit is required for lighted or animated signs.

(A) All mechanical, electrical, plumbing and gas work requires a permit. Appropriate calculations and information about equipment is required.
(B) Permits are specifically required for the following:
(1) Heat pump replacement, water heater change out, and service change.
(2) An electrical permit is required when new branch circuits are added to the panel.
(3) Plumbing permits are required when water supply lines have additions made to them that require a drain.
(4) The addition of a new fixture with a supply line and drain requires a permit.
(C) Permits must be paid in full at the time they are issued. Permits must be applied for in person and signed at the time of issuance. Only contractors that comply with the local laws will be issued permits.

(A) State law requires residential construction to be done by licensed residential builders and specialty contractors. Construction must comply with all applicable state laws, building codes, zoning regulations and local municipal ordinances.
(B) Individual homeowners are allowed to perform work in their primary residence with immediate family members provided that a permit is obtained. No business license is required of the homeowner provided they do all of the work themselves or with immediate family members who are not defined by South Carolina state laws as contractors or registered entities or individuals.
(C) Immediate family members shall hereby be defined as wife, husband, mother, father, sister, brother, son, daughter, mother-in-law, father-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, grandmother, grandfather, grandson, granddaughter, stepmother, stepfather, stepson, and stepdaughter.
(D) Nothing in this section may be construed to authorize an owner of a residential building or structure to hire a person or entity that is not licensed or registered in accordance with the provisions of the Code of Laws of South Carolina.

Simple replacement of an existing outlet, valve, or fixture does not require a permit as long as water lines or plumbing drainage lines are not moved or altered. The replacement of commodes or faucets does not require a permit.

Plumbing permits are based on total number of fixtures or appliances supplied with water and/or sewer.
