The board, for meritorious service rendered by any member of the police department in the due discharge of his duty, may permit such member to retain, for his own benefit, any reward or present tendered him therefor, upon report being made of the proposed reward or present. It shall be cause for removal of any member of the department to receive any such reward or present without notice thereto to the board and without its permission.
