Sections 2-84-150 through 2-84-180, inclusive, shall not apply to firearms, bowie knives, dirks, slung- shots, metallic knuckles or other deadly weapons of like character. All such weapons, except those the superintendent deems to be of use to the department of police and chooses to retain for the department's use, shall be destroyed without undue delay. The superintendent is authorized to enter into agreements necessary to effectuate such weapon destruction, subject to the availability of duly appropriated funds.
