HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION
In order to implement the provisions of this chapter, there is hereby established the Camden Historic Landmarks Commission, hereafter referred to as the “Commission.” The Commission shall consist of five residents of the city.

(A) Members shall be appointed by the City Council. Membership of the Commission will consist of citizens with a demonstrated interest in historic preservation who are able to prepare for and attend meetings. It shall be the policy of the Commission to seek citizens for appointment who have educational backgrounds and work experience involving architecture, archeology, construction, history, planning, engineering, law, banking, real estate, or related disciplines to the extent they are available in the community.
(B) Members of the Commission shall assume their duties and be installed at the first regular meeting of the Commission following appointment. Members shall serve without compensation.
(C) Members shall not hold any other public office of position in the City of Camden or Kershaw County.

(A) The term of office for each member of the Commission shall be four years. Terms shall run from September 1 to August 31.
(B) Membership shall be identified by place numbers one through seven. Terms of office in the four odd-numbered places shall expire in odd-numbered years and those in even-numbered places shall expire in even-numbered years; provided, however, that each member of the Commission shall serve until his or her successor is appointed and duly installed.

Any member of the Commission may be removed from membership upon recommendation of Commission Chairman and upon confirmation by the City Council for repeated failure to attend meetings of the Commission, or for any other cause deemed sufficient by the Commission Chairman and City Council.

In the event any place on the Commission becomes vacant due to removal, resignation, or any other cause, the City Council shall appoint a replacement within 60 days for the remainder of the unexpired term.

The Commission shall elect from its membership a Chairman and Vice-Chairman who shall serve for one year or until their successors are elected. No member shall be elected Chairman or Vice-Chairman for more than three consecutive years. The Commission shall appoint a Secretary, who may be an officer or employee of the city. The Secretary shall not be a voting member of the Commission.

Any member of the Commission who has a direct or indirect interest in any property which is the subject matter of, or affected by, a decision of the Commission shall be disqualified from participating in the decision of the Commission in connection therewith.
