The Fire Chief shall keep or cause to be kept a record of all meetings of the company and the attendance of the members, a record of all fires, and, during the last week in April of each year, file with the City Clerk a full report of these records of attendance and fires, which report shall be under oath.

It shall be the duty of the Fire Chief to investigate into the cause of any accidental or destructive fire occurring in the city. In case there is reason to suspect that there was any criminal act or violation of a city ordinance in connection therewith, he or she shall report the same to the City Attorney.

(A) The Fire Chief shall serve for such a term as may be provided by law, and may be removed in the manner provided for the removal of officers.
(B) Provided, that if any member of the Fire Department, having a rank therein, shall be appointed Fire Chief, upon the expiration of his or her term or the termination of his or her services for any reason, he or she shall resume the status and rank held before his or her appointment as Chief.

(A) Prospective members of the Fire Department, after examination, shall be appointed by the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners, and promotions shall be made in the same manner as provided by law.
(B) No firefighter shall be discharged except after a hearing before the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners as provided by law.

In making appointments to the Fire Department, no person shall be deprived of an opportunity to serve on the Fire Department because of race, religion, skin color, national origin, or sex. No arbitrary rules on height, weight, or achievement of strength or unrelated job needs shall be imposed. No handicapped person shall be denied, merely by virtue of being handicapped, appointment to a position on the Fire Department which the handicapped person is competent to fill.

The Fire Chief may, with the consent of the Commissioner of Public Health and Safety, make rules and regulations for the hours of duty, uniforms, vacations, and conduct of the members and volunteers which shall be binding on all firefighters while on duty.

Firefighters shall obey the orders of the superior officers of the Fire Department while on duty.
