§ 155.01 DEFINITIONS.
   For the purpose of this chapter the following definitions shall apply unless the context clearly indicates or requires a different meaning.
   ABOVE ROOF GRAPHIC. A street graphic which is displayed above the roof.
   APPROVED MATERIALS. Such materials as approved by the Village Building Commissioner or his assignees.
   AWNING. Any structure made of cloth, plastic, metal, or any other similar material attached to and projecting from a building when the awning is so erected as to permit its being raised to a position flat against the building when not in use or in a permanent extended rigid position.
   BUSINESS. 
      (1)   GENERAL RETAIL. That category of use which allows for a broad range of commercial ventures as specified in § 159.057.
      (2)   LIMITED RETAIL. That category of use which allows for a narrower range of commercial ventures having a less intense use, as specified in § 159.056.
   CANOPY. Any structure, other than an awning, made of cloth, plastic, metal, or any other similar material attached to and projecting from a building and carried by a frame supported by the ground or sidewalk.
   ERECT. To build, construct, attach, hand place, suspend, or affix. This is also to include the painting of any graphic.
   FACING or SURFACE. The surface or face of a graphic upon, against, or through which the message is displayed or illustrated.
   GRAPHIC. The terms GRAPHIC and SIGN are synonymous.
   GROUND GRAPHIC. Any graphic which is supported by one or more columns, poles, uprights, or braces in or upon the ground and which is not a direct part of the building.
   ILLUMINATED GRAPHIC. Any graphic which has characters, letters, figures, designs, or outline illuminated by electric lights, liquid crystal displays, light emitting diodes, liquid crystal analog, or any similar device, or has luminous tubes as part of the sign. No sign shall have blinking or fluttering lights or other illuminating devices of the flashing or intermittent type, except that signs denoting the time, temperature, and other similar information shall not be considered a flashing sign or otherwise prohibited.
   INCOMBUSTIBLE MATERIAL. Any material which will not ignite at or below a temperature of 1200° F. and will not continue to burn or glow at or below that temperature.
   ITEM OF INFORMATION. Any of the following are considered an item of information:
      (1)   A syllable of a word;
      (2)   An abbreviation;
      (3)   A number;
      (4)   A symbol, geometric or nongeometric shapes; or
      (5)   A shape of unusual configuration.
   MANUFACTURING. That category of use which allows for the cleaning, testing, repairing, fabricating, assembling, or processing of products or materials, as specified in § 159.071.
   MARQUEE. Any hood or awning of permanent construction projecting from the wall of a building above an entrance with advertising copy attached thereto.
   REAL ESTATE SIGNS. Any sign which includes on either face any of, but not limited to, the following terminology: "For Sale", "For Rent", "Open House", "New House", "Home Inspection", "Visitors Invited", "Installed By", "Built By", "Constructed By", "By Owner", "Model", and any sign with the name of a rental agency, broker, contractor, owner, or agent.
   RESIDENTIAL. That category of use, in which non-transient families, households, or individuals live, excluding those that are defined as institutional, as specified in §§ 159.040 through 159.046.
   ROOF GRAPHIC. A street graphic which is displayed on a surface whose pitch exceeds 30 degrees from the vertical.
   SIGNABLE AREA. An area of the wall or facade of the building which is free of windows and doors or major architectural detail, with a pitch that does not exceed 30 degrees from the vertical, or is a simulated mansard style facade.
   STREET GRAPHIC. Every sign, billboard, ground sign, wall sign, roof sign, illuminated sign, projecting sign, temporary, pylon, or pole sign, marquee, awning, and canopy, and any announcement, declaration, demonstration, display, illustration, logo, or insignia used to advertise or promote the interest of any person when the same is placed out of doors or in windows facing a street in view of the general public. These include signs other than public information signs, but do not include buildings.
   TEMPORARY SIGNS. As regulated by § 155.23, shall include any sign or advertising display with or without frames, intended to be displayed for a limited duration.
   WALL. A surface whose pitch does not exceed 0 degrees from vertical.
   WALL GRAPHIC. A street graphic which is displayed on a surface whose pitch does not exceed 30 degrees from the vertical, or is displayed on a simulated mansard style facade.
