6-4-3: RABIES CONTROL:
   A.   Dogs And Cats:
      1.   Inoculation Required: Every owner or keeper of any dog or cat within the limits of the village shall cause such dog or cat to be inoculated against rabies from time to time by a licensed veterinarian in such a manner so that such dog or cat will be continuously immune from rabies. (1983 Code § 8-4-3; amd. 2011 Code)
      2.   Collar And Tag Required: Every dog or cat kept within the village shall be provided by its owner or keeper with a good and substantial collar, and he shall cause to be attached thereto in a secure manner a current inoculation tag issued by the county or by any governmental body or municipality. Such person shall at all times cause such dog or cat to wear such collar with such inoculation tag attached thereto. (1983 Code § 8-4-4; amd. 2011 Code)
      3.   Fines And No Contest Procedures: See section 1-4B-1 of this code for fines for violation of this subsection and title 1, chapter 4, article C of this code for no contest procedures. (2011 Code)
      4.   Impoundment Procedure:
         a.   No Tags: Any dog or cat found within the corporate limits of the village not wearing a collar with the inoculation tag attached thereto as required by subsection A2 of this section shall be impounded and disposed of as hereinafter provided. (1983 Code § 8-4-5)
         b.   With Tags: When any dog or cat known to have an inoculation tag shall be impounded, notice of the impounding of such dog or cat shall immediately be given to the owner or keeper of such animal by mail or telephone by the person in charge of the animal shelter; provided, that the name and address of such owner or keeper can be ascertained with reasonable effort.    B.   Quarantine Of Suspects; Destruction Of Rabid Animals: Any dog, cat or other animal having symptoms of a disease known as rabies shall be confined under the supervision of a veterinarian for a period of ten (10) days. Any dog, cat or other animal having any symptoms of rabies that may be impounded by the village police department shall be immediately placed in the care of veterinarian. If it shall be deemed that the dog, cat or other animal is suffering from rabies, said animal may be immediately destroyed. (1983 Code § 8-4-16)
