SMOKE DETECTORS
For the purpose of this subchapter, the following definitions shall apply unless the context clearly indicates or requires a different meaning. For the purposes of this subchapter, certain abbreviations, terms, phrases, words and their derivatives shall be construed as set forth in the definitions sections of the State Building Codes and the town's Zoning Ordinance. For purpose of this subchapter, all other wording shall be defined as per a dictionary.
AUTOMATIC SMOKE DETECTOR DEVICE (120-VOLT PLUG-IN). A self-acting approved device powered by 120 volts, cord and plug connected, operating by its own mechanism when actuated by smoke. Note: may be used in residential dwelling units constructed prior to 1-1-1975.
AUTOMATIC SMOKE DETECTOR DEVICE (BATTERY POWERED). A self-acting approved battery powered device, operating by its own mechanism when actuated by smoke. Note: may be used in residential dwelling units constructed prior to 1-1-1975.
AUTOMATIC SMOKE DETECTOR OUTLET (120-VOLT). A self-acting approved outlet (non- plug-in) powered by 120 volts operating by its own mechanism when actuated by smoke. Note: required in all residential dwelling units constructed after 1-1-1975. As per NEC 210-71, a state amendment to the State Electrical Code.
RENTAL RESIDENTIAL DWELLING UNIT. A structure with one or two dwelling units that is not owner occupied; or a structure with three or more dwelling units whose units are not required to have smoke detectors under the State Building Code.
RESIDENTIAL DWELLING UNIT. Single-family dwellings, two-family dwellings, apartment houses, condominiums and/or town houses.
(A) A minimum of one 120-volt outlet shall be installed outside each sleeping area in each dwelling unit within single-family dwellings, two-family dwellings, apartment houses, condominiums and/or town houses for the connection of approved fixed automatic smoke detectors (non-plug-in) as required in the State Building Code.
(B) Automatic smoke detector outlets are required in residential dwelling units. The outlets shall be located on or near the ceiling in accordance with the listing and the instructions of the manufacturer of the approved automatic smoke detector.
(C) Exception: the 120-volt outlets specified in this section shall not be required when an approved automatic smoke detecting system is installed which provides equivalent protection and whose primary source of power is 120-volts. (Note: the wording in this section is identical to the wording contained in § 210-71, state amendment number one to the 1984 and 1987 State Electrical Code. This wording is also identical to the wording contained in § 210-27 of both the 1978 and the 1981 editions of the State Electrical Code.)
(D) Local exception No. 1: a battery powered, approved automatic smoke detector may be used in rental residential dwelling units constructed prior to 1-1-1975 in lieu of the 120-volt automatic smoke detector outlet required in this section.
(E) Local exception No. 2: a 120-volt (plug-in-type) automatic smoke detector may be used in residential dwelling units constructed prior to 1-1-1975 in lieu of the 120-volt automatic smoke detector outlet required in this section.
