9-6-8: COMMERCIAL USES:
For all commercial uses, only the following signs are hereby permitted and then only if accessory and incidental to a permitted or special use:
   A.   A-Frame Signs:
      1.   Location: A-frame signs are permitted in commercial zones. No A-frame sign shall be placed upon a public right of way. No A-frame sign will be located closer than five feet (5') to a public right of way, sidewalk, driveway, or any motor vehicle traffic or foot traffic. A-frame signs shall only be allowed during business hours.
      2.   Construction: The sign will be made of sturdy construction with a two inch by four inch (2" x 4") dimensional lumber frame and three-fourths inch (3/4") exterior grade plywood as the face material. The face shall not exceed thirty inches by forty eight inches (30" x 48") high, the entire sign shall not exceed sixty inches (60") high when standing. The sign will be painted to protect it against the weather and any copy on the sign will be painted. In case where changeable copy is desired, the message can be placed on paper and covered with a piece of removable thirty inch by forty eight inch by one-fourth inch (30" x 48" x 1/4") plexiglass to protect the paper sign from being damaged by the elements. The sign will be anchored to the ground so that it cannot be knocked or blown over. The anchorage will not be permanent in nature and will be removed from the ground when the sign is not in use.
      3.   Number: There shall not be more than one A-frame sign for each principal business in a multiple-business building, such as a strip mall, or not more than one A-frame sign per twenty five feet (25') of frontage for a single principal business building.
   B.   Awning And Canopy Signs:
      1.   Number: There shall not be more than one awning or canopy sign for each principal building except that where the building abuts two (2) or more streets, additional such signs, one oriented to each abutting street, shall be permitted.
      2.   Area: The gross surface area of an awning or canopy sign shall not exceed fifty percent (50%) of the gross surface area of the smallest face of the awning or canopy to which such sign is to be affixed.
      3.   Height: An awning or canopy sign shall not project higher than the top of the awning or canopy to which such sign is to be affixed. Awning or canopy signs shall maintain a minimum clearance of seven feet (7') to the bottom of the valance and eight feet (8') to the frame above the sidewalk and comply with all other clearance requirements.
   C.   Bus Bench Or Shelter Signs:
      1.   Location: Bus bench or bus shelter signs may be located in any commercial zone and shall be considered on premises detached signs provided that they are only located at public transportation stops as designated by the Utah transit authority.
      2.   Number: No more than one bench or shelter may be located at designated public transportation stops.
      3.   Area: The square footage of advertising on any bench or shelter sign may be counted as part of the on premises detached limitations.
      4.   License: The sign company shall maintain a current business license. Each year upon renewal of license a complete list of bench signs located in the city shall be provided.
      5.   Repair: The city reserves the right to have any bench or shelter sign found to be in disrepair removed within thirty (30) days after the owner receives notice.
   D.   Advertising Benches:
      1.   Location: Advertising benches may be located in any commercial zone and shall be considered on premises detached signs provided that they are only located at intersections and designated public transportation stops as defined in subsection C of this section.
      2.   Number: No more than two (2) advertising benches may be located per intersection and no more than one advertising bench at each site.
      3.   Area: The square footage of advertising on any bench or shelter sign may be counted as part of the on premises detached limitations.
      4.   License: The sign company shall maintain a current business license. Each year upon renewal of license a complete list of bench signs located in the city shall be provided.
      5.   Repair: The city reserves the right to have any bench or shelter sign found to be in disrepair removed within thirty (30) days after the owner receives notice.
   E.   Ground Signs, Pole Signs Or Monument Signs:
      1.   Number: There shall not be more than one ground, monument or pole sign for each principal building except that where the building abuts two (2) or more streets, additional such signs, one oriented to each abutting street, shall be permitted.
      2.   Area: The gross surface area of a ground, monument or pole sign shall not exceed one hundred fifty (150) square feet for each exposed face nor exceed an aggregate gross area of three hundred (300) square feet.
      3.   Location: A ground, monument or pole sign may be located in any required yard, but shall not extend over any lot line or within ten feet (10') of any point of vehicular access from a zoning lot to a public roadway.
      4.   Height: A ground or monument sign shall not project higher than twenty feet (20') and a pole sign shall not project higher than forty five feet (45'), as measured from base of sign or ground of nearest adjacent roadway, whichever is lower. A pole sign shall have a minimum clearance of ten feet (10') between the ground and the underside of the sign located on said pole.
   F.   Projecting Signs:
      1.   Number: There shall not be more than one projecting sign for each principal building except that where the building abuts two (2) or more streets, additional such signs, one oriented to each abutting street, shall be permitted.
      2.   Area: The gross surface area of a projecting sign shall not exceed thirty (30) square feet in gross surface area for each exposed face nor exceed an aggregate gross surface area of sixty (60) square feet.
      3.   Location: Projecting signs will be allowed to extend even with the roofline or parapet wall of the building. When a building has more than one level the wall on which the sign is installed will govern.
      4.   Height: Projecting signs shall have a minimum clearance of ten feet (10') between the ground and any part of a projecting sign.
   G.   Roof Signs:
      1.   Number: There shall not be more than one roof sign for each principal building except that where the building abuts two (2) or more streets, additional such signs, one oriented to each abutting street shall be permitted.
      2.   Area: The gross surface area of a roof sign shall not exceed one hundred fifty (150) square feet.
      3.   Height: Roof signs must not exceed the maximum allowable height of the building within the zone in which it is located.
      4.   Special: All roof signs shall be installed or erected in such a manner that there is no visual support structure; no visual guide wires, braces, or secondary supports. Roof signs shall be finished in such a manner that the visual appearance from all sides is such that they appear to be part of the building itself.
   H.   Wall Signs:
      1.   Number: There shall be not more than two (2) wall signs for each principal building except that where the building abuts two (2) or more streets, additional such signs, one oriented to each abutting street shall be permitted.
      2.   Area: The gross surface area of wall signs shall not exceed twenty percent (20%) of the area of the building wall, including doors and windows, to which the sign is to be affixed or one hundred fifty (150) square feet, whichever is smaller.
      3.   Location: A wall sign may be located on the outermost wall of any principal building, but shall not project more than sixteen inches (16") from the wall to which the sign is to be affixed. The location and arrangement of all wall signs may be subject to the review and approval of the city council.
      4.   Height: A wall sign shall not project higher than the parapet line of the wall to which the sign is to be affixed or thirty five feet (35'), as measured from the base of the building wall to which the sign is to be affixed, whichever is lower.
      5.   Special Conditions: Where a principal building is devoted to two (2) or more permitted uses, the operator of each such use may install a wall sign upon his/her proportionate share of the building wall to which the sign is to be affixed. The maximum gross surface area of each wall sign shall be determined by calculating the proportionate share of the area of the building wall, including doors and windows, to which the sign is to be affixed and applying such proportion to the total permitted wall sign aggregate gross surface area for the building.
   I.   Window Signs: Not more than two (2) permanent signs may be painted on or otherwise displayed from the surface of any window, showcase, or other similar facility per each ground floor occupancy of a building. The total area of such signs shall not exceed thirty percent (30%) of the total window area. (Ord. 2011-02, 3-15-2011)
