In any district the height limitations of the district may be exceeded by a monument, spire or shaft for ornamental purposes only, or by a building occupied exclusively as a church, cathedral or temple. However, in a residence district, no point on the side wall of such building above the height limitation of the district shall be nearer to the vertical plan through adjacent interior side lot line than a distance equal to one third the height of such point above the curb level.
