A member of the Police Department may continue his active service until the age of sixty-five and thereafter may reapply to the Mayor for successive periods of service of one year until he has reached the age of seventy, at which time retirement becomes mandatory. Any such yearly extension shall be subject to passage of a physical examination and the approval of Council.
