§ 73.051 OPERATION BY PERSONS UNDER 18 YEARS OF AGE.

   (A)   A person less than 18 years of age who operates or rides a motorized bicycle on a street or highway shall do the following:

      (1)   Wear protective headgear meeting the minimum standards set by the Bureau or a helmet that meets the standards established by the United States Department of Transportation under 49 C.F.R. § 571.218, in effect January 1, 1979; or

      (2)   Wear protective glasses, goggles or a transparent face shield.

   (B)   The parent of a child and the guardian of a protected person may not authorize or knowingly permit the child or protected person to violate this subchapter.

BICYCLES

§ 73.065 TRAFFIC LAWS APPLY TO BICYCLES.

   Any person operating a bicycle upon a street shall be granted all of the rights and shall be subject to all of the duties applicable to the driver of a vehicle under the laws of this state declaring rules of the road applicable to vehicles and under Ch. 71 of this code, except as to special regulations in this subchapter, and except as to those provisions of state law and Ch. 71 which by their nature can have no application.

§ 73.066 CODE PROVISIONS APPLICABLE.

   The provisions of this Traffic Code shall apply whenever a bicycle is operated upon any street, sidewalk or alley or upon any public path set aside for the exclusive use of bicycles, subject to those exceptions stated herein.

§ 73.067 BICYCLES SUBJECT TO TRAFFIC-CONTROL DEVICES.

   (A)   Any person operating a bicycle shall obey the instructions of official traffic-control signals, signs and other devices applicable to vehicles unless otherwise directed by a police officer.

   (B)   Whenever authorized signs are erected, including that no right or left or U-turn is permitted, no person operating a bicycle shall disobey the direction of any such sign, except where such person dismounts from a bicycle to make any such turn, in which event, such person shall then obey the regulations applicable to pedestrians.

§ 73.068 MANNER OF RIDING; NUMBER OF PASSENGERS.

   A person propelling a bicycle shall not ride other than astride a permanent and regular seat attached thereto. No bicycle shall be used to carry more persons at one time than the number for which it is designed and equipped.

§ 73.069 RIDING ON STREETS.

   A person operating a bicycle upon a street shall ride as near to the right-hand side of the roadway as practicable, exercising due care when passing a standing vehicle or one proceeding in the same direction. Bicycles shall be ridden in single file when passing other vehicles or other objects in the roadway, and at no time shall bicycles be ridden more than two abreast.

§ 73.070 RIGHT-OF-WAY OF PEDESTRIANS ON SIDEWALKS.

   When a person is riding a bicycle upon a sidewalk, such person shall yield the right-of-way to any pedestrian. Persons riding bicycles should give an audible signal a reasonable distance before overtaking and passing a pedestrian.

§ 73.071 HANDLEBAR USE REQUIRED.

   The hands of the operator shall be on the handlebars at all times except while in the act of signaling.
