679.07 ILLEGAL POSSESSION OR ACCUMULATION OF CARTS.
   (a)   Any person removing a shopping cart from the premises of an owner, without the written permission of the owner or the owner's authorized agent, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor larceny. Michigan carries two misdemeanor-level penalties for larceny Michigan State Law 750.356.
   (b)   Any owner or lessee of a residential/commercial property that knowingly allows one or more shopping carts to remain on the property without written permission of the cart owner or the owner's authorized agent, is subject to being charged with possession of stolen property in the 3rd degree. This offense is a gross misdemeanor. However, no charges will be brought if the owner or lessee has a record of contacting the owner(s) of the cart(s) on a weekly basis until the cart(s) are removed.
