The Mayor shall be elected for a term of four (4) years and shall assume office on the first Monday in January following his or her election. The election for Mayor shall be conducted on a non-partisan basis in November of odd numbered years according to the rules and provisions set forth in Article Twelve of this Charter. No person shall serve more than three (3) consecutive full terms as Mayor of the Merged Government.
The Mayor shall be a qualified voter and a resident of the Urban County for a period of at least three (3) years prior to filing for the Office of Mayor. The Mayor shall continue to reside within the territorial limits of the Merged Government throughout his or her term of office.

Annotation—(1) This section was proposed for amendment by Ordinance No. 65-87; the amendment was adopted by the voters on November 3, 1987; and accordingly this section was amended effective January 1, 1988.
(2) The year in which elections for mayor are held was changed to even numbered years, pursuant to an amendment to the Kentucky Constitution proposed by 1992 Ky. Acts Ch. 168 and ratified by the voters on November 3, 1992.
