Sec. 23-35. - Maintenance allowance.
(a)   Every member of the division of fire and emergency services shall receive a uniform allowance of eighty-five dollars ($85.00) per month.
(b)   Every member of the division of police shall receive a uniform allowance of eighty-five dollars ($85.00) per month.
(c)   Every member of the division of fire and emergency services and division of police who is presently required to maintain dress uniform shall receive the sum of four hundred dollars ($400.00) as compensation for such uniform. Any person now a member of either of the division of fire and emergency services or division of police who may hereafter be transferred to duty requiring the purchase of dress uniform as required by either of the divisions and who has not been compensated under the provisions of this subsection shall receive the sum of four hundred dollars ($400.00).
(d)   Any person appointed as a member of the division of fire and emergency services or the police force shall, upon being so appointed, receive the sum of two thousand eight hundred fifty dollars ($2,850.00) to be applied to the purchase of uniform and equipment as required by the urban county government. Such uniforms and equipment shall be the property of the urban county government until such time as any such person may be permanently appointed as a member of either division.
(e)   Members of the division of police and the division of fire and emergency services may be eligible to receive replacement uniforms, equipment and protective clothing, pursuant to the following criteria:
(i)   The item in question must have been damaged or destroyed in the performance of the employee's duties and must cost more than two hundred fifty dollars ($250.00) to replace;
(ii)   The replacement must be approved by the director of risk management as well as by the chief of the employee's division; and
(iii)   The damage results from other than normal wear and tear.
(iv)   No more than ten thousand dollars ($10,000.00) per year shall be spent on replacement uniforms, equipment or protective clothing.
