The director, division of traffic engineering is hereby authorized to determine and designate intersections where particular hazards exist and to determine whether vehicles shall stop or yield at one (1) or more entrances to any such intersections, and shall erect a stop or yield sign at every such place where a stop or yield is required. Every stop sign erected pursuant to this article shall bear the word "STOP" in letters not less than six (6) inches in height. Every stop or yield sign shall be located as near as practicable at the nearest line of the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection or, if none, at the nearest line of the roadway; however, in the case of a "T" intersection, where there is no feasible location for a stop or yield sign on the near side, the stop or yield sign for the none-through street may be located on the far side.
