The excavation must be done for the full width of the pavement, and the necessary space on each side to allow for easy setting of one-inch strips, which must be five (5) inches in depth. The depth of the excavation must be four and one-half (4½) inches below the finished surface of the pavement. Where necessary, this soil or foundation must be tamped until it is firm and solid.
The subgrade must be sprinkled just prior to the laying of the concrete. A sufficient number of pegs must be used to hold the strips to a straight and true line. No warped or inferior strips will be used.
