(a) Expansion joints shall be placed along and adjacent to each curbline or along each gutter line and transversely at thirty-foot intervals or as shown upon the plans, unless otherwise directed by the urban county engineer.
(b) Expansion joints shall be of an approved type of asphaltic nature, having a thickness of one-half inch, and a width of one (1) inch greater than the concrete thickness. The length of the joints shall be not less than six (6) feet except where shorter pieces are required to meet conditions. Three-quarter-inch smooth steel bars two (2) feet in length shall be placed through the expansion joints at two-foot intervals or as shown upon the plans. Half of each bar shall be painted with an approved type of paint at least twenty-four (24) hours before being used. An approved type of sleeve shall be placed on the painted end of each bar. The sleeve end of the bar shall alternate through the expansion joint.
