(a) When installation is required, at least one smoke detector shall be installed to protect each structural level and to protect each individual sleeping area, room, and/or unit. Sleeping area is defined as the area or areas of the housing unit in Section 1321.01, where the bedrooms or sleeping rooms are located, and if separated by other use areas (such as a kitchen or living room), but not a bathroom or closet, the separate sleeping areas shall require separate protection.
(b) For the housing units described in Section 1321.01, at least one smoke detector shall be required for each tenant space and one smoke detector for each structural level.
