The merit commission system is hereby adopted and implemented. The merit commission established hereby shall consist of five (5) members appointed by the sheriff, with the approval of the majority of the county board. (1977 Code ch. 20; amd. Ord., 2-13-2007; 2009 Code)
Of the initial appointments to what was then the three (3) member commission, one was for a term of two (2) years, one was for a term of four (4) years and one was for a term of six (6) years. The respective successors of the initial members shall be appointed in the same manner as the original appointments for a six (6) year term. (1977 Code ch. 20; amd. Ord., 2-13-2007)
If a vacancy shall occur in the office of a commissioner, the sheriff, with the approval of the majority of the members of the county board, shall appoint a suitable person to serve the unexpired portion of that commissioner's term. If the sheriff fails to appoint a person to fill the vacancy within thirty (30) days, the chair of the county board shall appoint a person to fill the unexpired portion of the term, with the approval of a majority of the members of the county board.
