1331.06 MASONRY CHIMNEYS; GAS VENTS.
   Masonry chimneys shall be constructed, anchored, supported and reinforced as required in this chapter and the applicable provisions of Chapter 10 of the Ohio Residential Code. Chimneys shall be structurally sound, durable, smoke tight and capable of conveying the flue gasses to the exterior safely.
   (a)   Masonry Chimneys. As used herein, “masonry chimney” means any one of the following: brick chimney, concrete chimney, concrete masonry unit, concrete chimney block and sawed or dressed stone. Chimneys exposed on the exterior shall be faced with brick, stone, or material approved by the Building Department.
   (b)   Heat Appliances Requiring Chimneys. All gas-fired heat appliances shall be connected to a masonry chimney. No gas logs, gas grates, gas-fired radiant heaters or similar heat appliances shall be installed except in a fireplace connected with a masonry chimney. However, high-efficiency heat appliances, including but not limited to furnaces, room or space heaters and water heaters, shall not be required to be connected to a masonry chimney provided the following conditions are met:
      (1)   They are installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions; and
      (2)   The exhaust is in such a location, size and appearance so as not to cause a disturbance to the surrounding property owners, as determined by the Building Official.
   (c)   Appliances Permitting Type BW Gas Vents. Type BW gas vents may be used only with approved vented recessed gas heaters having inputs not greater than specified in the individual listing.
   (d)   Vents. Vent connectors shall be connected to a masonry chimney except for BW vents. (Ord. 2011-31. Passed 6-14-11.)
