5-1-5: APPOINTMENTS, PROMOTIONS AND DISCHARGES:
Appointments to and promotions within the police department, other than to the office of police chief and deputy police chief, shall be made by the board of fire and police commissioners in the manner provided by state law. No nonprobationary police officer shall be discharged except after a hearing on charges before the board of fire and police commissioners as provided by state law. The board of fire and police commissioners may discharge probationary police officers at any time without prior notice or hearing pursuant to such rules and procedures, if any, as may be adopted by said board for such cases. Nothing in this section shall be construed as affecting the power of the village president to appoint and village manager to remove or discharge the police chief pursuant to section 5-1-2 of this chapter or the power of the police chief to appoint and remove the deputy police chief pursuant to section 5-1-4-1 of this chapter.
