(A) All full-time employees are granted a vacation with pay. After completing 6 months of continuous service, a new employee may receive 1 week (5 days) of paid vacation to be taken prior to his or her anniversary date of hiring. After 12 months of continuous employment, employees shall be entitled to 10 working days of vacation, which must be taken within 12 months after they are earned. In no case will an employee receive more than 2 weeks of paid vacation for the first year.
(B) Vacations will not be allowed to accumulate from year to year.
(C) Time of service can be transferred between departments.
(D) If a holiday falls during an employee’s scheduled vacation, he or she is entitled to an added day off with pay.
(E) If an employee becomes ill or is injured while on vacation, the scheduled vacation time shall be counted as vacation. If the disability continues beyond the scheduled time of vacation, the sick leave allowances, if any, shall begin on the first scheduled working day after the end of the scheduled vacation.
(F) The vacation schedule for civilian employees shall be as follows:
(1) For 1 through 4 years of employment, 2 weeks vacation which is 10 working days;
(2) Upon completion of the fourth year anniversary through 9 years of employment, 3 weeks vacation which is 15 working days;
(3) Upon completion of the ninth anniversary year through 14 years of employment, 4 weeks vacation which is 20 working days;
(4) Upon completion of the fourteenth anniversary year through 20 years, 5 weeks vacation which is 25 working days.
(5) Upon completion of the twentieth anniversary year and thereafter, 6 weeks vacation which is 30 working days.
(G) Vacations may be split into parts. Employees shall apply for vacations according to the rules, policies or schedules established by their department directors.
(H) A vacation schedule shall be posted by April 1 of each year giving priority to seniority. The schedule will reflect the needs of the Department and the ability of the remaining staff to do the work in a proper manner. The schedule is subject to change in case of an emergency.
(I) On separation, an employee will be paid only for vacation time, on a pro rata basis, not taken during the year of separation, although he or she is not entitled to payment if his or her dismissal is due to malfeasance. Employees who elect not to take vacations they have earned may not be paid any additional compensation, as outlined by the state’s Board of Accounts.
(J) This section shall become effective on January 1, 1986.

(K) Vacation time due shall be described as the total amount of vacation time granted on years of service time accured as to police officers employed by the city prior to the enactment of this section:
(1) Three weeks vacation time shall be granted after the completion of 1 year of service.
(2) Four weeks vacation time shall be granted after the completion of 3 years of service.
(3) Five weeks vacation time shall be granted after the completion of 6 years of service.
(4) Six weeks vacation time shall be granted after the completion of 14 years of service.
(5) Vacation time shall be scheduled in accordance with this section and Police Department general orders.
(L) Police officers hired by the city from and after the passage of this section shall receive vacation time based upon completed years of service as follows:
(1) One week vacation time shall be granted after the completion of 1 years of service.
(2) Two weeks vacation time shall be granted after the completion of 2 years of service.
(3) Three weeks vacation time shall be granted after the completion of 5 years of service.
(4) Four weeks of vacation time shall be granted after the completion of 8 years of service.
(5) Five weeks of vacation time shall be granted after the completion of 13 years of service.
(6) Vacation time shall be scheduled in accordance with this section and Police Department general orders.

(M) Fire Department personnel.
(1) Eligibility. Employees shall begin to earn their vacation allowance as of their date of hire. Insurance coverage shall commence as of their date of hire.
(2) Duration. Eligible employees shall be granted an annual paid vacation as follows:
(a) Platoon employees. Ten duty days.
(b) Forty-hour employees. Equivalent to above in calendar days as 1 equals 3.
(c) Eight years of service. Upon completion of 8 years of service: an additional 4 duty days. (If the employee’s anniversary date falls before May 1 of that year, he or she shall receive 4 days. If the anniversary date falls after May 1, the vacation shall be prorated as stated in the rules and regulations).
(d) Fourteen years of service. Upon completion of 14 years of service, an employee is entitled to an additional 2 days off.
(3) Allowance. Members hired after December 31, 1989, shall be granted annual vacation and reduction days based on the following schedule:
(a) One year of service. Three 4-day picks (12 days total). Employees completing their first year of service during the year shall have their vacation prorated by earning 1 day vacation for every 2 months worked.
(b) Two years of service. Three 4-day picks and one 1-day pick (13 days total).
(c) Three years of service. Three 4-day picks and one 2-day pick (14 days total).
(d) Four years of service. Three 4-day picks and one 3-day pick (15 days total).
(e) Five years of service. Four 4-day picks (16 days total).
(f) Six years of service. Four 4-day picks (16 days total).
(g) Seven years of service. Four 4-day picks (16 days total).
(h) Eight years of service. Five 4-day picks (20 days total).
(i) Fourteen years of service. Five 4-day picks and one 2-day pick (22 days total).
(4) Holiday conflict. Employees whose scheduled vacation day occurs on a holiday, receives holiday pay as set out in § 37.025 in lieu of additional vacation time.
