The street commissioner, under the direction of the council, shall have supervision of roads, streets, bridges, sidewalks, crossings, alleys, lanes, public grounds, parks, commons, drains, ditches, sewers, corporate buildings and corporate property and all improvements made by the corporation, and perform such other duties as may be prescribed by ordinance and receive such fees as may be fixed by the council.
