The purpose of the commission is to hold hearings, compel the production of evidence, and determine the merits of complaints alleging unfair or discriminatory practices in housing, employment, education, credit, or places of public accommodation; to investigate and study the existence, character, causes, and extent of inequity and discrimination and to attempt to eliminate inequity and discrimination by educating the public and promoting equity and human rights in the community; and to take action in the community to promote equitable and inclusive behavior and to eliminate discrimination and advance equity based on age, race, creed, color, sex, national origin, religion, ancestry, disability, marital status, familial status, sexual orientation, or gender identity.
