GENERAL
For the purpose of this title, the following definitions shall apply unless the context clearly indicates or requires a different meaning.
AUTHORIZED EMERGENCY VEHICLES.
(1) Vehicles of the Fire Department, police vehicles and ambulances and other emergency vehicles operated by or for hospitals or health and hospital corporations under I.C. 16-22;
(2) Vehicles other than ambulances which are owned by persons, firms, corporations other than hospitals and are used in emergency services, may be designated as emergency if the vehicles are authorized to operate as such by the Department of Highways;
(3) Motor vehicles that are approved by the State Emergency Medical Services Commission that are:
(a) Ambulances that are owned by persons, firms or corporations other than hospitals; or
(b) Not ambulances and provide emergency medical service.
(4) Vehicles of the Department of Correction that are:
(a) Designated by the Department of Correction as emergency vehicles; and/or
(b) Responding to an emergency.
CRASH. A collision of vehicles or a vehicle and an object on a public street, highway, right-of-way or publicly-owned property.
IMPOUNDMENT. The act of taking temporary custody of a vehicle and towing it from a public street, highway or right-of-way to an authorized secured area.
OFFICIAL TRAFFIC SIGNAGE. All signs, markings and devices, other than signals not inconsistent with this traffic code, placed or erected by authority of the Town Council or Street Commissioner for the purpose of guiding, directing, warning or regulating traffic.
PARKING. The standing of a vehicle, whether occupied or not, upon a public highway, otherwise than temporarily for the reasonable expeditious loading or unloading of passengers or merchandise, provided the loading or unloading of passengers or merchandise shall not consume more than five minutes.
PERSON. All natural persons, firms, partnerships and corporations.
POLICE HOLD. An order from the Danville Police Department to impound a vehicle because of its suspected involvement in criminal activity.
POLICE OFFICER. The Chief of Police, all deputies of the Chief of Police or any police officer or person having police power under any law of the state with authority or jurisdiction to enforce this traffic code.
PUBLIC SQUARE. The block or square marked and denoted “public square” on the original plat of the town and occupied by the County Court House.
STORAGE FEE. That certain sum of money charged the owner, operator, or authorized representative of same, for the safekeeping of the impounded vehicle.
TOW. The act of lifting, pushing, pulling or removing a vehicle.
TOWING FEE. That certain sum of money charged the owner, operator, or authorized representative of same, of a towed vehicle.
VEHICLE. Every device in, upon or by which any person or property is or may be transported or drawn upon a public highway, except devices moved by human power and shall include anything attached to the front or the rear of every device.
WRECKER. Any person engaged in the business of offering the services of a towing vehicle for use in removing, pulling, lifting or pushing another vehicle which is disabled, and shall include the employees, agents and towing vehicles used in the business of providing towing services.

(A) It shall be unlawful for any person to refuse or fail to comply with any lawful order, sign or direction of a police officer.
(B) The provisions of this traffic code regulating the movement, parking and standing of vehicles shall not apply to authorized emergency vehicles, as defined herein, while the operator of the vehicle is operating the same in an emergency in the necessary performance of public duties. This exemption shall not, however, protect the operator of any vehicle from the consequences of a reckless disregard of the safety of others.
