True copies of the drawings and plans bearing the approval stamp of the building commissioner shall be filed with the department of buildings and shall remain on file in that office for a period of six months after the occupation of such building, after which upon demand, such drawings and plans shall be returned by the building commissioner to the person by whom they have been deposited. It shall not be obligatory upon the building commissioner to retain such drawings and plans in his custody for more than six months after the occupation of the building to which they relate.
