8-3-4: PLANTING REQUIREMENTS:
   A.   Street Tree Species To Be Planted: The following list constitutes the official street tree species for the village of Broadview, Illinois. No species other than those included in this list may be planted as street trees without permission of the director of public works:
      1.   Large Trees:
Ginkgo
Hackberry
Locust
Red oak
Scarlet maple
Scarlet oak
Shingle oak
Sugar maple
Swamp white oak
Sweet gum
Tulip tree
White linden
      2.   Small Trees:
Grey birch
Hornbean
Ironwood
Pear
   B.   Spacing: The spacing of street trees will be in accordance with the tree species size classes in subsection A of this section, and no trees may be planted closer than the following: small trees, thirty feet (30'); and large trees, forty five feet (45'); except in special plantings designed or approved by a landscape architect.
   C.   Distance From Curb And Sidewalk: The distance that trees may be planted from curbs or curb lines and sidewalks will be in accordance with the tree species size classes listed in subsection A of this section, and no trees may be planted closer to any curb or sidewalk than the following: small trees, two feet (2'); and large trees, four feet (4').
   D.   Distance From Street Corners And Fireplugs: No street tree shall be planted closer than thirty five feet (35') of any street corner, measured from the point of nearest intersecting curbs or curb lines. No street trees shall be planted closer than ten feet (10') of any fireplug.
   E.   Utilities: No street trees other than those species listed as small trees in subsection A of this section may be planted under or within ten (10) lateral feet of any overhead utility wire, or over or within five (5) lateral feet of any underground water line, sewer line, transmission line or other utility.
      1.   Poles And Wires: Any person given the right to maintain poles and wires in the streets, alleys or other public places in the municipality shall, in the absence of provision in the franchise concerning the subject, keep the wires and poles free from and away from any trees or shrubs in such places so far as may be possible and shall keep all such trees and shrubs properly trimmed, subject to the supervision of the director of public works or his designee, so that no injury shall be done either to the poles or wires or the shrubs and trees by their contact.
      2.   Gas Pipes: Any person maintaining any gas pipes in the municipality shall, in the absence of provision in the franchise concerning the subject, keep such pipes free from leaks so that no injury shall be done to any trees or shrubs.
   F.   Excavations: In making excavations in streets or other public places, proper care shall be taken to avoid injury to the roots of any tree or shrub, wherever possible. (1987 Code; amd. Ord. 2001-019, 8-20-2001; Ord. CO-2023-15, 5-15-2023)
