Unclaimed property shall be held by the police department for a period of at least three months; thereafter such property will be transferred to the city purchasing division for sale to the public at public auction or disposed of pursuant to the provisions indicated in Section 2.36.030. Unclaimed property transferred to the city pursuant to this section shall not be redeemable by the owner or other persons entitled to possession. If the purchasing division determines that any such property transferred to it for sale is needed for a public use, such property may be retained by the city and need not be sold.
