1040.01 DEFINITIONS.
   Unless the context specifically indicates otherwise, as used in this chapter:
   (1)   "B.O.D." means biochemical oxygen demand or the quantity of oxygen utilized in the biochemical oxidation of organic matter under standard laboratory procedure in five days at twenty degrees Celsius, expressed in parts per million by weight.
   (2)   "Building drain" means that part of the lowest horizontal piping of a drainage system which receives the discharge from soil, waste and other drainage pipes inside the walls of the building and conveys it to the building sewer, beginning five feet outside the inner face of the building wall.
   (3)   "Building sewer" means the extension from the building drain to the public sewer or other place of disposal.
   (4)   "Combined sewer" means any sewer receiving both storm water and sewage.
   (5)   "Director" means the Director of Public Services or his or her authorized deputy, agent or representative.
   (6)   "Garbage" means waste from the preparation, cooking and dispensing of food and from the handling, storage and sale of produce.
   (7)   "Industrial wastes" means the liquid or water-carried wastes from industrial processes, as distinct from sanitary sewage.
   (8)   "Natural outlet" means any outlet into a watercourse, pond, ditch, lake or other body of surface or ground water.
   (9)   "pH" means the logarithm of the reciprocal of the hydrogen ion concentration in grams per liter of solution.
   (10)   "Properly shredded garbage" means garbage that has been shredded to such a degree that all particles shall be carried freely under the flow conditions normally prevailing in the public sanitary or combined sewer, with no particle larger than one-half inch in any dimension.
   (11)   "Public sewer" means a sewer that is controlled by the City.
   (12)   "Sanitary sewage" means the liquid or water-carried waste discharged from the sanitary conveniences of dwellings (including apartment houses and hotels), office buildings, factories or institutions.
   (13)   "Sanitary sewer" means a sewer to which storm waters are not intentionally admitted.
   (14)   "Sewage" means any liquid or water-carried waste from residences, business buildings, institutions, laboratories and industrial establishments, together with storm waters as may be present.
   (15)   "Sewage treatment plant" means any arrangement of devices and structures used for treating sewage.
   (16)   "Sewage works" means all facilities for collecting, pumping, treating and disposing of sewage.
   (17)   "Sewer" means a pipe or conduit for carrying sewage.
   (18)   "Storm drain or storm sewer" means any drain or sewer, either natural or artificial, which is intended expressly for the conveyance of storm water and uncontaminated industrial wastes.
   (19)   "Storm water" means that part of the rainfall which reaches the sewers as run-off from natural land surfaces, building roofs or pavements, or as ground water infiltration.
   (20)   "Suspended solids" means solids that either float on the surface of or are suspended in water, sewage or other liquids, and which are removable by laboratory filtering in accordance with standard laboratory procedure.
   (21)   "Uncontaminated industrial wastes" means water which has not come into contact with any substance used in or incidental to industrial processing operations.
   (22)   "Watercourse" means an open, natural channel in which a flow of water occurs either continuously or intermittently.
