862.01 DEFINITIONS.
   The following words, terms and phrases, when used in this chapter, shall have the meanings ascribed to them in this section, except where the context clearly indicates a different meaning:
   (a)   "Charitable organization" shall mean a benevolent, educational, philanthropic, humane, patriotic or eleemosynary organization or persons which sells goods or solicits or obtains contributions solicited from the public for charitable purposes.
   (b)   "Public purpose organization" shall mean an educational institution certified by the State Board of Education; veterans organization incorporated under federal law; nonprofit service organization; which is exempt from taxation pursuant to the provision of IRC other than Section 26 USCA Section 501(c)(3), its principal purpose is not charitable but solicits from time to time, funds for a charitable purpose; an organization qualified under IRC Section 26 USCA Section 501(c)(3); charitable organizations, licensed by Michigan Department of Social Services which serves children and family individuals or groups which can demonstrate its objective to be a project of direct benefit to the City.
   (c)   "Religious Organization" shall mean a duly constituted religious organization or a group affiliated with and forming an intricate part of a religious organization, no part of the net income which inures to the direct benefit of any individual if it has received a declaration of current tax exempt status from the United States. The affiliated group shall not be required to obtain a declaration if the parent or principal organization has obtained tax exempt status.
   (d)   "Solicit" shall mean to obtain gifts or contributions of money, clothing or other valuable thing for the support or benefit of any charitable or non-profit or public purpose organization, corporation or project; and shall include the request of information on the background, occupation, economic status, social status, religious status, political status, attitudes, viewpoints, occupants of a residence, telephone number or the like, of another person for the purpose of compiling such information as raw or refined data into a document, record, book or directory except for purposes of the U.S. Census.
